  11. CONNECTIONS TO CANTERBURY Through our analysis of Geoffrey Chaucer s The Canterbury Tales, it is clear that Chaucer had many observations about the societal norms in which he lived. He communicated information about gender, religion, careers/titles, wealth, marriage/love through a clever satirical lens.

  12. Inspired by his work, you will be required to generate a research question that creates a modernized connection with his work. You will investigate current sources, and create an informative essay that departs from Chaucer s time and shines an unbiasedlight on a subject that holds relevancy in our modern world.

  13. DISSECTING THE PROMPT Writing Prompt: -Using a minimum of 6 sources (3 from the approved databases-3 more from reliable sources of your choosing), explain the modern realities/treatment/facts/practices that surround a modern pilgrim/stereotype of your choosing. -Your essay should go beyond simple facts about the pilgrim you choose (ex: a simple summary of a career will not suffice). -You must create a specific self-generated research question that will allow your essay to address your topic in a more specific manner. -It is your job to relay strongly supported information about your research topic (not to argue a personal agenda).

  14. LOOKING AT THE PROMPT: RAFT What role do you play in writing this essay? Who is your intended audience? What format/type of essay are expected to write? What tone should your essay convey?

  15. THE DETAILS (PAY ATTENTION TO THE DETAILS) Adhere to MLA format Submit a formal Annotated Bibliography prior to the submission of your essay Submit a Works Cited page with the final draft of your essay Use a formal/academic/unbiased tone Writing should be free of spelling/grammatical errors Use a blend of direct quotes and paraphrased information throughout your essay (utilizing a minimum of 6 reliable sources published/updated from 2007 to current) All sources must be cited using author attributions or parenthetical citations that ALIGN WITH YOUR WORKS CITED PAGE

  16. BASIC STRUCTURE BUT YOU HAVE THE FREEDOM TO ADJUST -Introductory paragraph (hook/background/thesis statement) -At least 3 body paragraphs (each body paragraph must contain a minimum of 2 SEE sets that help explain your topic) -Conclusion (restated thesis/addresses the question of So what? -why does this research hold relevancy in our current world?)

  17. IN YOUR PROMPT PACKET Step 1: Brainstorm-Create a list of topics/pilgrims/stereotypes that Chaucer explored in his writing of The Canterbury Tales: Help (since we did not get to read all of the prologue): Men, women, priests/nuns, other religious leaders, farmers, students, police men, rich, poor, cooks, married individuals, single individuals, hunters, the old, the young, criminals, doctors, business owners, policemen, knights (similar to military men), lawyers, rich party hosts (no job- just party all day), cloth makers (our factory workers), construction men/carpenters, bounty hunters, educated individuals, uneducated individuals, kings/queens

  18. STEP 2: CREATE A MORE SPECIFIC RESEARCH QUESTION THAT YOU CAN USE TO GROUND YOUR INVESTIGATION (remember, you are not trying to ARGUE anything, you are simply exploring and presenting information) Sample Research Question: How are women treated in the modern workplace? Pilgrim/Stereotype= Women This RQ relates to The Canterbury Tales because Chaucer portrayed gender roles/career opportunities for men and women in his prologue/tales. Sample Research Question: What are indicators of wealth in 2017? Pilgrim/Stereotype= Upper-class This RQ relates to The Canterbury Tales because Chaucer discussed signs of wealth in his culture throughout his prologue/tales.

  19. YOU TRY! In your packet 1. Create 3 possible research questions 2. Make connections to The Canterbury Tales (you may want to revisit the prologue if you want to address a stereotype/pilgrim that we did not read) 3. Talk to others in your group-help EACHOHTER come up with interesting research questions that you can be EXCITED about 4. HIGHLIGHT the research question that you end up LOVING the most- and ask for my approval

  20. PRINTED SOURCES DUE 8/31 Please use the approved databases at azlibrary.gov to provide 3 of your sources. Please use a critical eye to select your final 3 sources from the internet/print/media. ALL OF YOUR SOURCES MUST BE PUBLISHED/UPDATED FROM 2007- CURRENT. You must print OR show your 6 sources to your teacher in class on THURSDAY 8/31 (please speak to me if you have NO printing options- but before you do really try PROBLEM SOLVE on your own. Can a parent print at work? Can you email to a friend and have them print? Can you go to lab C206 and print? Can you get the library to print for you? Can a neighbor print for you? Can someone in this class print yours?)

  21. IMPORTANT DUE DATES! WRITE THESE DOWN! PLAN AHEAD! Submit either a typed outline OR first draft progress to turnitin.com by midnight on THURSDAY 9/7 (you cannot afford to waste time when the sub is here) Final Draft (including a Works Cited page) is due in turnitin.com by midnight on Sunday 9/17

  22. READING THROUGH THE GENERAL OUTLINE Let s start by: Fill in our RESEARCH TOPIC Writing our RESEARCH QUESTION

  23. WRITING OUR THESIS STATEMENTS What is a thesis statement? The thesis statement states the main idea or the purpose of an essay. A great thesis statement has the following properties: A great thesis statement is very clear with what it is trying to say and it is very precise in the language used. A great thesis statement never begins with the phrase In this essay I will talk about . , I believe or any sentence in a similar vein. A great thesis statement talks about the topic/answers the research question

  24. YOUR THESIS SHOULD ANSWER YOUR RESEARCH QUESTION: LET S PRACTICE! Research Question: How are women treated in the modern workplace? Let s just say.. your 6 sources work together to say that women are not currently treated as equals to men in the modern workplace due to: -lower wages (body paragraph #1) -less women in managerial/authoritative roles (body paragraph #2) -harassment in the workplace (body paragraph #3) ON A STICKY NOTE: WRITE A THESIS STATEMENT FOR THE SAMPLE ABOVE

  25. SHARE-REVISE-SHARE In your groups, share the practice thesis statement you just created Together, choose 1 thesis statement that you feel is the strongest (consider word choice, detail, fluency) Edit your BEST thesis statement to be THE BEST IT CAN BE (strong vocabulary please) Prepare to share your group thesis statement with the class

  26. WRITING YOUR THESIS STATEMENT Now, look back at YOUR research question Create a thesis statement for your research essay ON YOUR OUTLINE handout REMINDERS: Your thesis statement -must answer/respond to your research question -must communicate what each body paragraph will focus on in your essay (3 prongs) -must not include sentence starters like I believe (this is NOT an argumentative essay, you are simply collecting research and INFORMING your reader about the FACTS) -avoid fallacious reasoning/overgeneralizations (your research may only inform for 1 side/perspective do not say ALL WOMEN EVERYWHERE ARE )

  27. A CLOSER LOOK AT YOUR INTRODUCTION: CREATE 3 POSSIBLE HOOKS FOR YOUR ESSAY Hook Ideas: -Anecdote When I was a young boy, my father worked at a coal mine. For 27 years, he made it his occupation to scrape and claw and grunt his way into the bowels of the earth, searching for fuel. On April 19, 2004, the bowels of the earth clawed back. -Statistics The average iceberg weighs over 100,000 metric tons. -Reveal a common misconception While most coffee enthusiasts would tell you that their favorite drink comes from a bean, they would be wrong. Coffee is actually made from a seed that is simply called a bean. -Set a scene The day of his birth began with Hurricane Charlie pounding at our door in Charleston, South Carolina.

  28. SAMPLE INTRODUCTION PARAGRAPH FOR RESEARCH/INFORMATIVE WRITING (HOOK, BACKGROUND, THESIS) It was a normal night when curiosity decided to sneak into the room. Pondering about how close the future was to today, countless headers about the latest technology appeared on the screen. I was content about the amazing new gadgets being developed, but one thing that caught my eye was that the majority of them were created under the government. One of the producers indicated was the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). This agency was created about 70 years ago. They produce 350 to 400 technical patents a year and hold 12,000 projects at a given moment. The agency produces a lot of research and development in the newest technology; however, one could question the true motive of all these projects. Based on recent projects, the main purpose for research and developments by groups under the government, such as DARPA, is to create advancements in weaponry and to benefit society with innovative technology.

  29. SETTING UP YOUR INTRODUCTORY PARAGRAPH WITH HANDOUT Come up with 3 possible hooks Bullet point information that will help provide background on stereotype Revise your thesis if necessary

  30. CREATE A FULL OUTLINE FOR WRITING-SHOW TEACHER FOR APPROVAL WHEN FINISHED! I. Introduction III. Body Paragraph 2 (2nd prong) A. Topic Sentence B. SEEset C. SEEset D. Concluding Sentence V. Concluding Paragraph A. Restated Thesis Statement B. Discuss WHY this research is relevant (why should your audience care) C. Leave readers with something to think about/consider/or a sense of closure A. Hook B. Background C. Thesis Statement II. Body Paragraph 1 (1st prong in thesis) IV. Body Paragraph 3 (3rd prong) A. Topic Sentence B. SEEset A. Topic Sentence B. SEEset C. SEEset D. Concluding Sentence C. SEEset *CAUTION: DO NOT ARGUE YOUR PERSONAL BIAS IN THE END OF THE ESSAY IT MAY BE TEMPTING! D. Concluding Sentence

  31. GOALS (I WILL NOT BE HERE TO REMIND YOU) Sub day= Use the COW or YOUR OWN TECHNOLOGY and make PROGRESS on an OUTLINE or FIRST DRAFT Submit either a typed outline OR first draft to turnitin.com by midnight on THURSDAY 9/7 (you cannot afford to waste time when the sub is here)

  32. CRAFTING YOUR BODY PARAGRAPHS: LETS LOOK AT A SAMPLE! (SEE SET 1, SEE SET 2) Governmental projects are meant to create new weaponry. The government is developing a technology that connects the human mind to computers. An article on the Daily Beast describes such development by claiming, the Pentagon is attempting what was, until recently, an impossible technological feat developing a high-bandwidth neural interface that would allow people to beam data from their minds to external devices and back. That s right a brain modem. One that could allow a soldier to, for example, control a drone with his mind ( Pentagon Research Could Make Brain Modem a Reality ). A device as such would primarily be used to assist soldiers in connecting to robots and computer systems to assist them in the battlefield. In addition, the government is being pressured to invent combat technology. An article by Christian Davenport describes the new competition between countries by announcing, the Pentagon finds itself in a new arms race, struggling to keep pace with forms of combat that are fought with bytes as well as bullets [h]arnessing the latest technology to upgrade the Defense Department s arsenal is top priority for Carter, who recently said, The race now depends on who can out-innovate faster than anyone else . In order to compete with other nations and protect itself, the government has to develop new weapon advancements to keep up with others. One of the government s purposes for research and development is to create more advanced weaponry to defend itself.

  33. REMEMBER TO INCLUDE TRANSITIONAL WORDS/PHRASES BETWEEN BODY PARAGRAPHS Agreement/additionaly/similarity Opposition / Limitation / Contradiction in contrast different from of course ..., but on the other hand on the contrary at the same time in spite of even so / though be that as it may then again above all in reality Conclusion / Summary / Restatement generally speaking in the final analysis all things considered as shown above in the long run given these points as has been noted in a word for the most part after all in essence altogether overall in any event in either case all in all in the first place not only ... but also as a matter of fact in like manner in addition coupled with in the same fashion / way first, second, third in the light of not to mention to say nothing of equally important by the same token

  34. CONCLUSION PARAGRAPH SAMPLE Restated thesis statement Research and development projects conducted under the government can help solve societal problems and innovate combat devices. The government is a host of many different projects that can possibly change the world. It is only fair to realize that their motive in invention and innovation can be received in a variety of ways from the general public. Some may see this cutting edge research as beneficial to our world, while others may deem it to be harmful. Ultimately, people have the right to be informed on what the government intends to do with these world changing creations; whether it is to help improve their lives, or to take others. Relevancy of research to audience STAY INFORMED
