Galatians 5:19-21, KJV 19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, 20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, 21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God
Introduction We are studying sins that constitute violations of the law of love or the royal law in our study of the works of the flesh and noted That these are commonplace in our society today That some find it hard to accept that these sins are all that bad But we must never forget that Paul tells us that committing any of these sins will keep one out of the kingdom of God - Galatians 5:21 Romans 8:13
Introduction These sins included in Galatians 5:20 & 21 are hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy (NKJV) hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings (KJV) enmities, strife, jealousies, wraths, factions, divisions, parties, envyings (ASV)
Introduction We have already considered six of the eight hatred (echthra) - hostility that one may harbor in one s heart toward another contentions (eris) - strife or quarreling that results from such hostility jealousies (zelos) - envy which casts grudging looks envy (phthonos) - envy which has arrived at hostile deeds wrath (thumos) - an explosive out of control anger strife (eritheia) - is a self-centered attitude in anything one does
Introduction In this lesson we will consider the remaining tw0 of the eight sins classed as sins which violate the law of love or royal law dichostasia (dissensions, seditions) - actions which result in divisions; where there is separation and no togetherness hairesis (heresies, factions) - denotes a body of people who belong to a particular school of thought or actions; also describes a sect
DICHOSTASIA (dissensions, seditions) This word means literally means is a standing apart It describes a condition where all fellowship or togetherness is gone This was the condition in Corinth - 1 Corinthians 3:3 Paul commanded to mark those who were divisive Romans 16:17; cf. 1 Timothy 1:18-20; 2 Timothy 2:16-18
DICHOSTASIA (dissensions, seditions) Such division may can be caused by Personal division - were two or more people refuse to speak or have anything to do with each other Class division - such as class warfare between the haves and have nots Party division - where devotion to a party goes before principle Racial division - Jews vs. Gentiles/Greeks vs. barbarian; discord between any races in general Theological division - misusing labels and fixing them unfairly on others Ecclesiastical division - church division, in the form of denominationalism
DICHOSTASIA (dissensions, seditions) This sin is committed when we confuse Prejudice and principle Galatians 2:11-29 - Ex. - Peter not walking according to the truth of the gospel and causing others to stumble Unreasonable stubbornness with unwavering conviction t0 the truth Galatians 4:17-18 - Judiazers were stubbornly clinging to the law of Moses and causing some Galatians brethren to fall from grace
HAIRESIS (heresies, factions) This word is close in meaning to dichostasia (dissensions, seditions) In the New Testament it is used to denote a body of people belonging to a particular school of thought or action Such as the sect of the Sadducees - Acts 5:17 No resurrection, angel or spirit - Acts 23:6-8 Or the sect of the Pharisees - Acts 15:5 Confess both - Acts 23:8 Early Christians were often accused of being of a sect - Acts 24:5, 14; 28:22
HAIRESIS (heresies, factions) Peter used this word in reference to false teachers who will bring in destructive divisions - 2 Peter 2:1 This word refers to divisiveness, especially the kind brought about by false teachers
Why These Eight Sins Are Included In The Works of the Flesh Remember that hatred, contentions, jealousies, envy, wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies all contribute to disrupting the fellowship and unity that should be found in the body of Christ Please consider the following
WHY THESE SINS ARE SO GREVIOUS Because of what Jesus did on the cross... He died to reconcile man back to God 2 Corinthians 5:18-21 He also died to reconcile man to man Ephesians 2:13-16 Because we are to preserve and protect this reconciliation made possible by Jesus We must preserve the unity with God, which sin destroys and also the unity with our brethren Ephesians 4:1-6
WHY THESE SINS ARE SO GREVIOUS Because these violations of the law of love undo the work of Christ on the cross Therefore, if we commit sins of moral impurity, we destroy our reconciliation with God Likewise, when we commit sins violating the law of love we destroy reconciliation Violations of the law of love/royal law Disregard the will of Christ concerning unity and the command of Paul concerning division John 17:20-21; 1 Corinthians 1:10-13
CONCLUSION Volitions of the law of love are serious offences Not only because they undo Christ s work on the cross But they will keep us out of the kingdom of heaven - Galatians 5:21 they who practice such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God
CONCLUSION Volitions of the law of love are serious offences Not only are we to avoid this sins ourselves, we must avoid those who engage in these sins - Romans 16:17-18; Ephesians 5:11 and have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather even reprove them
Let us therefore encourage one another to not only put away dissensions and heresies but, strive to bring forth the fruit of the Spirit love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law
What Shall We Do? Acts 2:38 Alien sinners must Hear the Gospel Romans 10:17; Hebrews 11:6 Believe it John 8:24 Repent of sin Acts 17:30 Confess that Christ is God s Son Matthew 10:34 Be baptized to wash away your sin Acts 2:38 An erring child of God must Repent and Pray for Forgiveness 1 John 1:7-9 Endure Trials - be faithful unto death Revelation 2:10
