  5. Introduction We are studying sins that constitute violations of the law of love or the royal law in our study of the works of the flesh and noted That these are commonplace in our society today That some find it hard to accept that these sins are all that bad But we must never forget that Paul tells us that committing any of these sins will keep one out of the kingdom of God - Galatians 5:21 Romans 8:13

  6. Introduction These sins included in Galatians 5:20 & 21 are hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy (NKJV) hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings (KJV) enmities, strife, jealousies, wraths, factions, divisions, parties, envyings (ASV)

  7. Introduction We have already considered four of the eight hatred (echthra) - hostility that one may harbor in one s heart toward another contentions (eris) - strife or quarreling that results from such hostility jealousies (zelos) - envy which casts grudging looks envy (phthonos) - envy which has arrived at hostile deeds

  8. Introduction The remaining fourof the eight sins are thumos (outburst of anger, wrath) - which describes an explosive, out of control temper eritheia (selfish ambitions, disputes, strife) - is a self-centered attitude in anything one does dichostasia (dissensions, seditions) - actions which results in divisions; where there is separation and no togetherness hairesis (heresies, factions) - denotes a body of people who belong to a particular school of thought or actions; describes a sect

  9. Introduction In this lesson we will consider the next two violations of the royal law of love Matthew 7:12; James 2:8 cf. Matthew 22:35-40 thumos (outburst of anger, wrath) - which describes an explosive, out of control temper eritheia (selfish ambitions, disputes, strife) - is a self-centered attitude in anything one does

  10. THUMOS (outbursts of anger, wrath) This word describes... The blaze of temper which flares into violent words and deeds The explosive temper which is uncontrolled Not to be confused with... Righteous indignation, which is proper and controlled such as the righteous the indignation of God - Romans 2:4-11; Romans 5:3-6; Exodus 32:7-14 Moses in destroying the golden calf - Exodus 32:15-35 Anger which is properly checked and not allowed to produce an occasion for sin - cf. Ephesians 4:26-27 Psalms 37:8

  11. THUMOS (outbursts of anger, wrath) Some try to make excuses for their explosive tempers as a hereditary issue, saying That is just me and the way I am or That is the fiery Irishman or a hot Italian coming out from me or that it is my human nature But, Christians, not matter what their nature are to be partakers of the divine nature of God and put these things away - 2 Peter 1:3-4 Ephesians 4:31-32; Colossians 3:8-11

  12. ERITHEIA (selfish ambitions, disputes, strife) This word describes a self-centered attitude in doing of any work Examples: Working solely for money Seeking and holding a political office solely for personal interest or ambition Doing the work of the Lord driven by the desire to gain recognition, or for personal ambition or rivalry

  13. ERITHEIA (selfish ambitions, disputes, strife) This word describes those in Paul s day who preached Christ out of jealousy - Phil. 1:15-17 It describes those who create a party spirit causing division in a local church Who act out of vain glory and desire to be first place Like Diotrephes - 3 John 1:9-10 Who take a stand, but not because of truth false brethren - 2 Corinthians 11:26; Galatians 2:4-5 Such a mindset is contrary to the mind of Christ we are to have - Philippians 2:3-5

  14. CONCLUSION Let us recognize and realize the grave danger of these works of the flesh because Paul warned Those who practice SUCH THINGS will not inherit the kingdom of God - Galatians 5:21

  15. Let us therefore encourage one another to not only put away wrath and strife But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof - Romans 13:14

  16. What Shall We Do? Acts 2:38 Alien sinners must Hear the Gospel Romans 10:17; Hebrews 11:6 Believe it John 8:24 Repent of sin Acts 17:30 Confess that Christ is God s Son Matthew 10:34 Be baptized to wash away your sin Acts 2:38 An erring child of God must Repent and Pray for Forgiveness 1 John 1:7-9 Endure Trials - be faithful unto death Revelation 2:10
