INTRODUCTION Many have been made to believe calling on the name of the Lord is accomplished by only a verb utterance In Acts 2:14-21, Peter quoted and applied the prophecy of Joel to the things that happened on the day of Pentecost We can read of similar expressions concerning calling on the Lord s name In a recent lesson, we discussed those Jesus spoke of in Matthew 7:21-23 and noted several important truths regarding such a calling 2

CALLINGONTHE NAMEOFTHE LORD The following are Bible examples of men calling on the Name of the Lord David called on the Lord when he fled from Absalom his son Psa. 3:1-8 And it shall be, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved Acts 2:21, ASV But Ananias answered, Lord, I have heard from many of this man, how much evil he did to thy saints at Jerusalem: and here he hath authority from the chief priests to bind all that call upon thy name Acts 9:13-14, ASV 3

CALLINGONTHE NAMEOFTHE LORD The following are Bible examples of men calling on the Name of the Lord And all that heard him were amazed, and said, Is not this he that in Jerusalem made havoc of them that called on this name? and he had come hither for this intent, that he might bring them bound before the chief priests Acts 9:21, ASV And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on his name Acts 22:16, ASV For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek: for the same Lord is Lord of all, and is rich unto all that call upon him: for, Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved Rom. 10:12-13, ASV 4

CALLINGONTHE NAMEOFTHE LORD The following are Bible examples of men calling on the Name of the Lord unto the church of God which is at Corinth, even them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ in every place, their Lord and ours 1 Cor. 1:2, ASV If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master s use, and prepared unto every good work. Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart 2 Tim. 2:21-22, KJV 5

CALLINGONTHE NAMEOFTHE LORD God calls on men and women to be saved by obedience to the gospel message But we are bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, for that God chose you from the beginning unto salvation in sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth: whereunto he called you through our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ 2 Thess. 2:13-14, ASV And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of Jehovah shall be delivered; for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be those that escape, as Jehovah hath said, and among the remnant those whom Jehovah doth call Joel 2:32, ASV 6

CALLINGONTHE NAMEOFTHE LORD Thus, salvation is found at mount Zion and in Jerusalem Mount Zion is where the law of forgiveness (the gospel) went fourth as Isaiah prophesied Isa. 2:3 Those who come to Mount Zion through hearing, believing and obeying the gospel message have entered the church of Christ and are forgiven of sins Heb. 12:22ff Jesus said, repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem Luke 24:25-27, 45-48 The forgiveness of sins is what brings escape of eternal condemnation and salvation 7

BEINGSAVED ROM. 10:13 IT MEANS Salvation is not accomplished solely by praying to the Lord Acts 9:9-11 The calling of Saul of Tarsus involved more than prayer Acts 9:5-6, 17-19; 22:16 None of the cases of conversion in the book of Acts were based on prayer alone where s the scripture? Those saved on Pentecost did more than pray or say, Lord, Lord Acts 2:21, 37-42 The saved are obedient believers who demonstrate their faith by DOING what God commands James 1:22-25 Heb. 5:8, 9; Mark 16:16; 1 Pet. 3:21 9

BEINGASAINT 1 COR. 1:2 Saints who in every place call on the name of Jesus Christ our Lord The saints in Jerusalem were like the saints in Damascus who call Acts 9:13-14 Of the like precious faith 2 Pet. 1:1 Of the common salvation Jude 3 Saints are former sinners who were called and are set apart by the gospel From the power of darkness Col. 1:12-13 Into a kingdom or church Col. 1:13 Into the fellowship of His Son 1 Cor. 1:9 By forgiveness Col. 1:14; Matt. 26:28 & Acts 2:38 IT MEANS 1 1

FOLLOW RIGHTEOUSNESS 2 Tim. 2:21-22 Saints must continue to live in obedience to the gospel we were called by Col. 1:21-23; John 8:31-32 IT MEANS If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master's use, and prepared unto every good work. Calling on the Lord Means Being Saved Rom. 10:13 Being in the church 1 Cor. 1:2 Being a saint 1 Cor. 1:2 Follow Righteousness 2 Tim. 2:21-22 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light 1 Pet. 2:9, KJV REVIEW & CONCLUSION 1 3
