Lead exposure can have detrimental effects on individuals, especially children. From damaging neurons to causing behavioral issues and slow development, the impact of lead exposure can be severe. Prevention through identifying sources of exposure and living safely with lead is crucial. Lead test kits can help in assessing lead presence in various environments like dust, soil, and paint chips. Proper sampling techniques in locations such as door frames, vents, exposed soil areas, and play areas can aid in detecting lead presence. Education and proactive measures are key in addressing the risks associated with lead exposure.

  1. Lead and You Adams HS November 2017

  2. Long-Term Effects of Lead Chemically, lead behaves like calcium. Where is calcium found in the body? Unlike calcium, lead damages neurons. In high concentrations, lead is poisonous In low concentrations, lead causes: Behavioral issues like ADD Learning problems Slow growth and development Hearing and speech problems Why are younger children at the most risk from lead?

  3. How does lead exposure occur? Ingestion Inhalation Main sources of lead Leaded paint & gasoline Soil Dust Water

  4. What can we do? Prevention is key! We can live safely with lead. First we need to know if lead is present then we can work to prevent exposure.

  5. Lead test kit What s inside the kit?

  9. Soil Sampling Good spots to test: look for exposed soil (not covered with mulch or grass) Near exterior wall of house Garden Play area

  10. Paint chip sampling Find paint that is in bad condition peeling or powdery If no paint comes off on the sticky tape, it is probably not a lead hazard.
