  5. Explaining a leadership election Explaining a leadership election 1. When a First Minister resigns, their political party must elect a new leader. That leader becomes the First Minister of Wales 2. Each political party has its own process for electing a new leader. This is the process for the Welsh Labour Party, as they are currently in power in the Welsh Government 3. The people choosing the new leader are the Welsh Labour Member of Senedds and party members 4.
