DOMESTIC ABUSE
SOME STATISTICS Over 32 million Americans are affected by domestic violence. This does not include the predicted 1/3 of cases that are never reported. 5% of convictions are on female abusers, males are victims too. of women are victims of domestic abuse at some point. That s 5-8 million women annually. In 2014, 702,000 children were mistreated and abused by family. Child abuse is reported once every ten seconds to the hotlines and shelters. 4 to 7 children in the US die every day from abuse or neglect. Being a victim to abuse as a child can affect your life expectancy by an average of 20 years.
EXAMPLES In today s media we see tragedy all the time and I think we ve become really desensitized to how horrific the events truly are. So I compiled some examples from this month alone in the news. Also, to consider, most of domestic abuse examples have children who are standing by watching the violence and they can be deeply affected as well.
IN THE MEDIA - RELATIONSHIP Tony Ledbetter in South Dakota was sentenced this month for mutilating his girlfriend with a pair of scissors. November 25th a United Nations diplomat invoked diplomatic immunity to avoid arrest after punching his wife in public. November 21st Mark Owens was indicted for attacking his ex wife with an ax and killing her. November 21st Hanson was charged with his girlfriend's murder after claiming she was hit by a car. She died in the hospital after medical officials ruled she was a part of domestic violence altercation. Glee star Naya Rivera was charged with assaulting her husband. She was charged with misdemeanor domestic battery earlier this week. Her husband allegedly provided a video of their assault in which their child was apparently present for the assault.
IN THE MEDIA - CHILDREN November 26th Mark Cox arrested for shooting his four year old son with an airsoft gun repeatedly because he wouldn t sit down when his mother told him to. November 17th a man suffocated his 11 year old autistic step grandson. Chelsea Sawyer was arrested on the 28th after leaving her two 3 and under children at home while she went to her job at the strip club; they were found wandering around outside naked. November 27th Brittany Robinson s father found her son s two day old corpse in a crawl space while getting down Christmas decorations. She was charged with criminal homicide, concealing the death of a child, tampering with evidence, and abuse of a corpse.
