Gifts & Fruits of The Holy Spirit
Holy Spirit Agent of mystical contemplation in the human person. will teach you everything and remind you of all that I told you. (Jn14:26) Third person of the Holy Trinity. (CCC) The personal love of the Father and the Son for each other. (CCC)
Grace The free and undeserved gift that God gives us to respond to our vocation to become His adopted children. First and foremost, gift of the Spirit. Includes the gifts the Spirit grants us in the salvation of others and in the growth of the Body of Christ, the Church. Efficacious when freely accepted.
Charisms Divine spiritual gifts to individuals or groups for the sake of others. Sometimes extraordinary (tongues, prophecy, healing) At the service of charity.
Charismatic Renewal Movement within Church focused on receiving and exercising the Gifts of the Holy Spirit. Purpose: Help people come into awareness of the Lordship of Jesus Christ and of the Baptism and gifts of the Holy Spirit.
Gifts of the Holy Spirit God s greatest gift is the Holy Spirit. (Pope Francis) Unmerited spiritual favors or benefits received in our souls and ordered toward our sanctification. Supernatural graces freely given to the soul and enable the graced person to respond freely and promptly to the inspirations of God. Docility: releasing control of my words and actions to God. Intended to complete and perfect the virtues of those who receive them. (CCC 1831) Given to the people of God generously. Having gifts that differ according to the graces given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; if service, in our serving; he who teaches, in his teaching; he who exhorts, in his exhortation; he who contributes, in liberality; he who gives aid, with zeal; he who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness. (Rom 12:6- 8) For the gifts and the call of God are irrevocable. (Rom 11:29).
Gifts The spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him: a spirit of wisdom and of understanding, A spirit of counsel and of strength, a spirit of knowledge and of fear of the Lord, and his delight shall be the fear of the Lord. (Isaiah 11:2-3) Other Gifts/Talents: Administration, Apostleship, Caregiving, Craftmanship, Discernment, Evangelization, Encouragement, Faith, Hospitality, Intercession, Knowledge, Mercy, Mission, Musicianship, Leadership, Trust, Service, Teacher, Communication, and more. Pray for them.
The Gifts Wisdom: the grace of being able to see everything with the eyes of God. It is a supernatural lens with which to view ourselves, others, and all of creation. Wisdom gives us the eyes to see this man or woman as a brother or sister in Christ. . Understanding: a grace which helps us to ponder deeply God s all-merciful and constant love for each one of us, grants us insights into the work of Holy Spirit in our daily routines, so that we may better serve the Lord by building his Kingdom here on earth. Counsel: a gift that nurtures our interior sensitivity to our conscience, and then aids us in taking the right action with the right intention. Knowledge: a special gift that leads to grasping the greatness and love of God and his relationship with every creature. This kind of knowledge goes beyond human knowledge and imparts to us knowledge that can only be received through divine gift. In noticing the beauty and the mystery of creation all around us, one receives intimate knowledge of the Creator,
The Gifts Fortitude: the gift through which our heart is freed from the sluggishness, uncertainty, and fears that can hinder it, so that the Word of the Lord may be put into practice authentically and with joy. The grace of fortitude grants us courage and perseverance so that we may continue to co-labor with Jesus in serving others. It helps us to grow in faith, hope, and love, and to cast off doubt, despair, and destructive patterns of thinking. Piety: filial trust in God, the capacity to pray to him with the love and simplicity of a humble heart. The gift that enables us to pray to our Father in heaven with child-like trust and confidence. Fear of the Lord: a gift of loving and profound reverence for God, rooted in the knowledge and understanding that it is in Him that we live and move and have our being. Fruits of the Holy Spirit Qualities that are activated in human beings through the work of the Holy Spirit. Signs that our life is being transformed or perfected by God. Experiencing the fruits make us feel closer to God (intimacy). Anything we do as children of God to the best of our ability for the greater glory of God and the good of the other. By their fruits you will know them. (Matt 7:20) appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain. (Jn 15:16)
The Fruits The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness,gentleness, self- control. (Gal 5:22-23) Church adds goodness, modesty, and chastity. (CCC 1832)
Specifics Love. Agape love is the highest form of love, love for both God and neighbor. It is selfless, focused on the other person, given freely and gladly without condition or the expectation of repayment, expressed in service, and willing to suffer on another s behalf. Joy. Joy is an interior contentment that comes from being close to God and in right relationship with others. Joy also comes with speaking and upholding the truth, honesty and integrity in relationships, enduring hardships, and decent conduct. Peace. Peace is the harmony that occurs when justice prevails. It happens when resources are shared equitably, power is used for service, interdependence is fostered, information is shared openly and honestly, the dignity of each person is respected, legitimate differences are tolerated, the disadvantaged receive help, hurts are forgiven and the common good is upheld.
Specifics Patience. Patience is the virtue of suffering interruption or delay with composure and without complaint; to suffer annoyance, insult, or mistreatment with self-restraint, refusing to be provoked; and to suffer burdens and difficult tasks with resolve and determination. It is also the willingness to slow down for another s benefit, to set aside one s personal plans and concerns, to go at another s pace, and to take whatever time is necessary to address their need. Kindness. Kindness is a warm and friendly disposition toward another. A kind person is polite and well mannered, respectful, and considerate, pleasant, and agreeable, cheerful and upbeat, caring and helpful, positive and complimentary. Generosity. Generosity is a bigheartedness grounded in an abundance mentality. It is unselfish sharing of one s treasure, time or talent extended to family and friends, strangers, and particularly to those in need.
Specifics Faithfulness. Faithfulness is demonstrated by loyalty to friends, duties performed, promises kept, commitments fulfilled, contracts completed, vows observed and being true to one s word. Gentleness. Gentleness is sensitivity for another person. It is concerned with another s welfare, safety, and security. Grounded in humility, it is careful, tender, considerate, affectionate, and mild-mannered, free of all pushiness, roughness, or abrasiveness in approaching others. Self-control. Self-control is self-mastery regardless of the circumstances, to be in control of oneself rather than to be controlled by temptations, events, or other people, especially when under pressure or in times of crisis. Obstacles I forgot there is a God who loves me. Ignorance & hardness of heart (Eph 4) How might I get them? Reason => Suffocating logic for reason/intellect Heart locked up and not open to divine revelation, to the divine indwelling.
Questions: What has been your experience of the Holy Spirit? Am I open to receiving these gifts? What gifts do I have? Am I using them? How might I get them? Am I aware of all that God has available for me? Do I know what God wants for me? Do I know what is expected of me? Am I becoming the child of God the Father intends me to be? What fruits am I producing in my life?
Gods Love Perfect, passionate, unconditional. Poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit for us to experience. There will never be a day where this does not happen. While we were still sinners . God acting on His love for us. It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you (Jn 15:16) This is my commandment: love one another as I love you. (Jn 15:12)
Love Willing the good of the other and then Lover, Beloved, Love When you fell in love, how did you feel? How did your behavior change? The rules don t matter until you know you are loved. How do you feel toward God?
Joy A feeling of pleasure caused by the possession of something one cherishes. (CCC 301) The feeling evoked by well-being, success, or good fortune. The expression or exhibition of such emotion : GAIETY A state of happiness or felicity : BLISS A source or cause of delight
Your Heart And I will give them another heart and a new spirit I will put within them. From their bodies I will remove the hearts of stone, and give them hearts of flesh,20so that they walk according to my statutes, taking care to keep my ordinances. (Ez11:19-20) I will give them a heart to know me, that I am the LORD. (Jer 24:7) I will place my law within them, and write it upon their hearts; Everyone, from least to greatest, shall know me. (Jer 31:33-34) The love of God has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us. (Rom 5:5)
