Genocide -Genocide is when a mass killing happens to a large group of people. These people usually share similar religion or race.
What happened? -The genocide occurred during the Bosnian war. It was a conflict between three main ethnic groups. The groups were the Serbs, Croats, and Muslims, resulting in civil war and genocide committed by the Serbs against the Muslims. -It occurred in Bosnia and Herzegovina, 1992 to 1995. -One of the worst mass murder since World War 2 happened in Srebrenica with more than 8000 men and boys killed.
How did it occur? -The Bosnian Serb forces, with the help of the Serb-dominated Yugoslav army, started claiming land. As the Serbs gained ground, they gathered local Muslims in scenes similar to the Holocaust. They killed them and tortured them and the Serbs labeled it ethnic cleansing.
Why did it occur? - After Yugoslavia fell into chaos. Slobodan Milosevic rise into power and wanted to reunite and secure ethnic Serb territory. Milosevic started inflaming long tensions between Serbs and Muslims. Milosevic attacked Bosnian Muslims and called their actions ethnic cleansing.
The worlds response - There were media reports about the mass killing and destruction of buildings, but people showed no concern. -The U.N. responded by sending troops to help distribute food and medicine to Muslims but did not allow the troops to interfere with the Serbs. They remained neutral no matter how bad the situation got. -In 1994, the world completely turned their attention to Bosnia when a Serb mortar shell struck a marketplace in Sarajevo. The sights and sounds of the incident was broadcasted globally and soon people wanted military intervention against the Serbs. -The war ended with a cease-fire after the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) took military action. -The U.S could have took action sooner but decided to stay out of the civil war and was considered the greatest failure of the west since the 1930s.
