18 July 2024 2 A soliloquy (pronounced so-LILL-oh-kwee) is a kind of monologue, or an extended speech by one character. In a soliloquy, though, the speech is not given to another character, and there is no one around to hear it. 18 July 2024 3 To oneself This is probably the most common form of soliloquy the character is simply thinking out loud or talking to an empty room. This is a way of taking their innermonologue and externalizing it. b. To a surrogate Types of Soliloquy In some soliloquies, the speaker is talking to an object rather than a character. For example, they may be speaking to a stuffed animal, an inanimate object, or a pet. (Of course, if the pet can talk and is a character, as is often the case in cartoons, then this would be a monologue rather than a soliloquy.) In some cases, a character will speak to a corpse or part of a corpse for example, the head of a slain enemy. 18 July 2024 4 C. To the audience Every once in a while, a character will turn around and speak directly to the audience. This may be part of a framing narrative, (e.g. sit and listen while I tell you a tale ), or it might be delivered at any point in the plot. This kind of soliloquy is a lot like an aside, but longer. 18 July 2024 6 A monologue is a lengthy speech by a single person. In a play, when a character utters a monologue that expresses his or her private thoughts, it is called a soliloquy. 18 July 2024 7 (1) A single person, who is patently not the poet, utters the speech that makes up the whole of the poem, in a specific situation at a critical moment. (2) This person addresses and interacts with one or more other people; but we know of the auditor s presence, and what they say and do, only from clues in the discourse of the single speaker. The dramatic monologue has the following features - (3) The main principle controlling the poet's formulation of what the lyric speaker says is to reveal to the reader, in a way that enhances its interest, the speaker's temperament and character.
