  3. What is a peer? Someone close to your own age, a friend, or a classmate. What is peer pressure? When someone tries to get you to do something you don t want to do. 3

  4. Explain the consequences of engaging in the activity. If someone asks you to do something you shouldn t, just say no! Pretend you didn t even hear the person pressuring you. Keep saying the same thing over and over. State the Facts Reverse the Pressure Steer Clear Walk Away Better Idea Broken Record Make an Excuse Say No Ignore Don t approach trouble! If you find yourself in a dangerous or unpleasant situation, walk away! Offer a better idea of something to do. Come up with a believable excuse to get out of a tricky situation. Put the pressure back on the person pressuring you. 4

  5. The nine Peer- Pressure Refusal Strategies are at the top of the page. Use them to help you complete the section. Put yourself in Cindy s place, and resist Valerie s pressure to spread the rumor about Ella. 5

  7. Jason spent a lot of time picking out just the right bracelet to give Emma for her birthday. As Jason was wrapping the gift, Myra came over and said, Oh, you got a really cute bracelet for Emma. She ll love it. The rest of us just got her gift cards. Suddenly, Jason wished he hadn t gotten the bracelet. He felt uncomfortable about being the only one bringing a gift that Emma would have to unwrap. He decided to take the bracelet back and give Emma a gift card instead. Why did Jason change his mind? Who did the pressuring in this scenario? Did Myra criticize the gift? What would have happened if Jason hadn t changed his mind? 7
