What is modifier? The word which gives extra information about another word of a sentence is called a modifier. As: It was a greatidea. Great idea He walks slowly. Walks slowly He walks veryslowly. Very slowly She stood before the swimmingpool. swimming pool
Do you know how many modifiers are there in English? According to the position of modifiers, they are of two types: 1. Pre-modifiers : It was a great idea. 2. Post Modifiers : He walks slowly. According to Modified words, Modifiers are of FOUR types: 1. Noun Modifier: An honest man is true to his word. 2. Adjective Modifier: The book is very interesting. 3. Verb Modifier: He always speaks the truth. 4. Adverb Modifier: He speaks very loudly.
Important to know: Terms which are used as Modifiers 1. Determiners: Article: A, an, the (Pre-modify the noun with an article) earth is round. Demonstrative: This, that, these, those (Pre-modify the noun with a demonstrative) pen is fine. Possessive: My, our, your, his, her, their, its, Rohim s etc. We love (Pre-modify the noun with a possessive) madrasah very much. Numerals: one, two, three, I gave him a (Pre-modify the noun with a determiner) taka note. Quantifiers: many, some, any, much, more, no, all, both, each, every, either, neither, few, a few, little etc. A poor man has (Pre-modify the noun with a quantifier) problems.
Important to know: Terms which are used as Modifiers 2. Adjective: There was a (Pre-modify the noun with an adjective) fox in a jungle. 3. Adverb: She speaks (Post-modify the verb with an adverb).
Important to know: Terms which are used as Modifiers 4. Participle: Participles are of 3 types i. Present Participle: ing-form of verb ii. Past Participle: Past participle form of verb iii. Perfect Participle: having + past participle form of verb Ex- We should not drink (Pre-modify the noun with a past participle) water. 5. Infinitive: to + present form of verb He wants (Post-modify the verb with an infinitive) a new shirt.
Important to know: Terms which are used as Modifiers 6. Appositive: Appositive is the extra information (other name) of a word Md. Abdul Hamid, (Post-modify the noun with an appositive) President of Bangladesh, is an honest man. 7. Relative Pronoun: Relative Pronoun (Who, What, Which, Whom, That, Where, When, Why, What) The boy (Post-modify the noun with a relative pronoun) who saved the child is my friend. 8. Prepositional Phrase: Preposition + Noun/Noun Phrase The book (Post-modify the noun with a prepositional phrase) on the table is green.
Important to know: Terms which are used as Modifiers 9. Intensifier: Intensifier strengthens the meaning of an adjective/adverb. The story is (Pre-modify the word with an intensifier) very interesting. 10. Down toner: Down toner weakens the meaning of a word. He is(Pre-modify the word with a down toner) almost wrong.
