  2. 2 Background & Methodology Objective: NEC is looking to better understand market trends & needs for storage virtualization, linking to the advantages of HYDRAstor over competitive offerings to inform the creation of a whitepaper. Research Methodology: In January, Spiceworks surveyed IT decision-makers through online research. A total of 152 respondents across the US and Canada took the 6-minute online survey. Respondent Qualification Criteria: The IT decision-makers were required to influence decisions on data storage, backup, & recovery or virtualization solutions at organizations with 100+ employees. 3. Executive Summary

  4. 4 Key Findings: StoragePractices, Drivers & Concerns Organizations currently use a wide variety of solutions to meet their datacenter storage needs. Organizations using (74%) or considering (20%) virtualization for storage display a slight preference for VMware vSphere (68%) over Microsoft Hyper-V (58%). Oracle RMAN (43%) and IBM TSM (40%) are the top backup applications for organizations using (58%) or considering (22%) backup appliance. Over the next 3 years, IT pros do not anticipate changing the amount of data they store on virtual systems; however, they do intend to move data off physical systems and into the cloud. With this sustained use of virtual machines, providers must keep in mind the most critical aspects of orgs data backup and recovery strategies: VMware & Hyper-V backup (72%) and disaster recovery (71%). Cost is the leading challenge with current datacenter storage solutions, and will be the largest hurdle for NEC to overcome as it is the top inhibitor to solution deployment and concern with regards to virtualized storage. NEC has an opportunity to help organizations address other leading challenges they currently face with datacenter storage solutions such as recovery time, security, capacity, stability and backup time. NEC should aim to highlight the top perceived benefits of virtualized storage, particularly performance/speed, as these are most likely to resonate with IT pros. Further, future messaging from NEC should aim to alleviate the leading concerns IT pros have with virtualized storage compared to other solutions. 5. 5 Key Findings: Brand Associations & Perceptions NEC HYDRAstor is not top of mind for IT pros, with the solution ranking lowest among key competitors for both awareness (63%) and familiarity (45%). Dell EMC Data Domain holds a sizeable advantage over key competitors in awareness (88%) and familiarity (76%). Further, nearly 2 in 5 (37%) IT pros report they are not at all familiar with NEC HYDRAstor. NEC has an opportunity to increase its footprint among the competitive set as there are similar levels of usage among the solutions test. Despite having the lowest rate of deployment (5%), a third (33%) of IT pros indicate they are considering (17%) or planning to evaluate (16%) NEC HYDRAstor. Dell EMC Data Domain (18%) and IBM ProtecTIER (15%) lead the way as the most common data backup storage solutions deployed. Overall satisfaction with the deployed solutions is high, indicating NEC will need to clearly demonstrate the benefits HYDRAstor can provide over other solutions in the market. Future marketing and communication efforts should aim to focus on the most important factors orgs consider when evaluating new data backup storage solutions IT pros identify cost/value, security, and backup speed as the top factors they consider when evaluating data backup storage solution providers.
