An ecosystem comprises various organisms living together in a community. Energy flow through food chains depicts how organisms obtain energy and nutrients from one another. Food chains show the sequence of feeding relationships, while a food web illustrates interconnected chains within a community. Trophic levels categorize organisms based on their feeding positions, from producers to tertiary consumers. A food pyramid represents energy flow efficiency across trophic levels, with each level storing about 1/10 of the energy from the level below.   3. Food Chains Every living thing needs energy in order to live. A representation of the feeding of one organism upon another in a sequence. In other words A food chain shows how each living thing gets food, and how nutrients and energy are passed from creature to creature. Grass Grasshopper Frog Snake Hawk

  4. Food Web The representation of many connected food chains Each food chain within the web represents one possible path that energy and nutrients may take It shows the relationships within a community

  5. Trophic Levels What is a trophic level? The feeding position in a food chain or food web 1stlevel Producer Makes its own food Example: plants 2ndlevel Primary Consumer Consumes producers Ex: mice eat plant seeds

  6. Trophic Levels 3rd level Secondary Consumer Consumes primary consumers Ex: snakes eat mice 4thlevel Tertiary Consumer Consumes secondary consumers Ex: hawks eat snakes

  7. Food Pyramid A diagram in which each trophic level is represented by a block, and the blocks are stacked on top of one another, with the lowest trophic level on the bottom. A representation of the energy flow as it moves from one level to another The energy stored by the organisms at each trophic level is about 1/10 the energy stored by the organisms in the level below. This is why it takes the shape of a pyramid.
