Understanding Double Fouls in Football

Double fouls can occur when both teams commit live-ball fouls during the same period. In such cases, penalties offset, and the down is replayed. Possession changes do not affect the outcome as long as the team in final possession had clean hands before fouling.

  4. Double fouls/offsetting fouls

  5. Rule 10-2-1 It is a double foul if both teams commit live ball fouls (other than nonplayer or UNS) during the same live-ball period in which There is no COP (unless the Team R fouls are PSK fouls); or There is a COP , and the team in final possession fouls prior to the final COP (i.e., didn t get the ball with clean hands ); or There is a COP and the team in final possession accepts the penalty for its opponents foul at any time during the down

  6. Double bock: Double both

  7. Notice: It doesnt matter how many times Rule 10-2-1 possession changes, only that the team in final possession got the ball before they fouled (i.e., with clean hands ) It is a double foul if both teams commit live ball fouls (other than nonplayer or UNS) during the same live-ball period in which There is no COP (unless the Team R fouls are PSK fouls); or There is a COP , and the team in final possession fouls prior to the final COP (i.e., didn t get the ball with clean hands ); or There is a COP and the team in final possession accepts the penalty for its opponents foul at any time during the down they fouled. because Team K is punting, we re basically acting as if Team R already had the ball when

  8. Enforcement when a true double foul? Penalties offset and the down is replayed.

  9. Down & possession after penalty Rule 4-2-1: After a distance penalty, the ball belongs to the team in possession at the time of the foul unless it is a PSK foul or KCI. the ball is almost always going to belong to the team that had possession when they fouled. (Watch out for angry coaches!)

  10. Double fouls & COP Know the rules to determine whether an offset is appropriate or if the team in final possession has an option to keep the ball (Rule 10-2-2). Recall: It doesn t matter how many times team possession changes If team in final possession got the ball with clean hands, they can keep it provided they decline their opponents foul (no matter when it occurred during the down), and so long as these are live-ball fouls and not LED fouls.

  11. Example 1 1/10 @ A-30. A75 is flagged for being illegally downfield. A1 s pass is intercepted by B7 at the A- 40, who runs and is downed at the A-10. During B7 s run, B9 is flagged for an illegal block in the back at the A-20.

  12. Example 1 1/10 @ A-30. A75 is flagged for being illegally downfield. A1 s pass is intercepted by B7 at the A- 40, who runs and is downed at the A-10. During B7 s run, B9 is flagged for an illegal block in the back at the A-20. B got the ball with clean hands; B can decline IDP and keep the ball while having their IBB enforced.

  13. Example 2 1/10 @ A-30. A1 s pass is intercepted by B7 at the A-40, who runs the ball back. During B7 s run, B9 is flagged for an illegal block in the back at the A-20. B7 is brought down at the A-10 by A65, who grabbed and twisted B7 s face mask.

  14. Orderof the fouls doesn t matter. Did team in final possession get ball with clean hands? Can B keep the ball? What must happen?

  15. Example 3 1/10 @ A-30. A1 hands off to A30 who runs to the A-40, where he fumbles as B66 horse-collar tackles him (flag is thrown). B70 recovers the fumble at the A-35. During A30 s run a teammate was flagged for holding at the line of scrimmage.

  16. COP?--yes, but did B get the ball with clean hands? What will we do here?

  17. Example 4 4/10 @ K-40. K9 s punt is fielded by R20 at the R- 30 and returned to midfield where he is downed. At the snap, K was flagged for illegal shift. During the kick, R35 was flagged for holding at the R-40.

  18. Example 4 4/10 @ K-40. K9 s punt is fielded by R20 at the R- 30 and returned to midfield where he is downed. At the snap, K was flagged for illegal shift. During the kick, R35 was flagged for holding at the R-40. Scrimmage kick play. Live ball fouls by both teams, yes. But, R s foul is a PSK foul, so we ll say they got the ball with clean hands. Now what?

  19. Example 5 1/10 @ A-30. At the snap Team A is flagged for illegal shift. A30 s run is followed by a fumble that is recovered by B99 and run back for an apparent touchdown. When B99 is at his own 10 yardline, he turns and taunts his pursuers on his way across the Team A goal line.

  20. Is this a double foul? No. Because Team B s foul was UNS, this is a LED foul. (Team A s coach is going to blow. a. gasket.) How do we handle this?

  21. Example 6 1/10 @ A-30. B45 is flagged for holding wideout A80 while A80 was starting his pass route. Then, A1 s long pass is intercepted by B3 at the B-30, who runs and is downed at midfield. During B3 s run, B20 is flagged for an illegal blindside block at the B-40.

  22. Double foul? why not? What do we say to the coach who can t understand why he can t have fifteen yards for the personal foul his player endured?

  23. Lets recap DOUBLE BOCK: DOUBLE BOTH (prost!) Double foul = Both teams commit live-ball fouls (other than UNS or nonplayer fouls) during the same down. If there s a COP (and we re not dealing with LED fouls or PSK fouls) then the team in final possession can decline the penalty for their opponent s foul, keep the ball, and have their own penalty enforced.

  24. Have a great night
