Religious Education Understanding Christianity
In this terms unit of work, we are going to be trying to understand: What does it mean if Christians believe God is holy and loving? We shall be learning what it means to be holy - as linked with God - and what it means to be loving - as linked with God.
I confess that I found the loving part easier to understand than the holy aspect but it is really interesting. We are going to studying a range of texts from the Bible: poems, letters and prayers, andChristian places of worship such as cathedrals. But lets start by thinking and having a chat with someone if they are nearby
WALT: identify what a god might be like. Think of a celebrity. Where do you get your information about the person from? How well do you know the person? Are there any surprises about this person? Do they know you?
What would it be like to actually know them? What difference would it make? What kinds of things would be added to your relationship if you talked with them, or shared events or activities with them? What kinds of things are added to your relationship if they see you when you are up and when you are down? In your head or with another person you need to answer these questions.
For Christian believers, knowing God is not like us knowing Lionel Messi or Billie Eilish. It is like having a real relationship with someone who knows you on your good and bad days. It is a relationship, a personal journey
Imagine that you are going to Build a god! Can you remember before Christmas we wrote about what a messiah for today s world might be like? Well, what sort of a God would you create?...
Spend some time thinking. Here are some ideas (some of them are poor ones so watch out). Create a spidergram of your all of the qualities that you have chosen for your God. You are not creating a superhero.
WILF: I can identify my self-created god s power, character, actions. I understand what omnipotent, omniscient and eternal mean and can relate them to a god. Now write down: What your god s greatest power is (how will it benefit the world?). What is your god s most useful characteristic? What can your god do to help the world?
In a few sentences, explain why being omnipotent, omniscient and eternal could be important when building a god. Check your work, does it say what you want it to say? Is it written well? Can you share it with someone and ask what their god would be like?
Tune in next week for the next step to understanding: What does it mean if Christians believe God is holy and loving? You are going to be a text detective!
