Case Study: Esperanza Rising Module 1 Unit 2 Lesson 4 Inferring About Characters Based on How They Respond to Challenges Chapter 4 Los Higos/Figs {
Learning Targets o I can answer text-dependent questions with evidence to support my ideas in class discussion. o I can identify situations in Esperanza Rising where a character s human rights are challenged. o I can make inferences about characters in the text and write to explain my thinking about the characters.
Chapter 4 Los Higos/Figs o The way people respond to challenges tells us a lot about who they are. o Throughout our study of Esperanza Rising, we will be thinking about the challenges Esperanza and other characters face, how those characters respond, and what that tells us about those characters. o As you listen to the story, you will focus on one of three characters: Mama, Abuelita, or Miguel. Look for how they respond to the challenges that they are faced with.
Chapter 4 Los Higos/Figs: Comparing Esperanza s Response to the Response of Other Characters o How is Esperanza s response to challenges like the response of the other characters? How is her response different?
Novel Study o 1. What did Tio Luis do to show the disapproval of mama s answer to his proposal? How did mama respond to this and why did she respond this way? o 2. What did mama and Esperanza decide to do to escape Tio Luis? What struggles do you predict this will lead to?
