How do little elephants grow up to be BIG elephants?
The answer is.. Cell Reproduction!! All living organisms have a life cycle! A life cycle begins with the organism s formation, is followed by growth and development and finally ends in death. Two types of reproduction: asexual and sexual
Three reasons why cells reproduce asexually 1.) Growth 2.) Repair 3.) Replacement
Mitosis The process in which the nucleus divides to form two identical nuclei Interphase Prophase Metaphase Anaphase Telophase Cytokinesis
Interphase Happens before mitosis begins Chromosomes are copied (# doubles)
Prophase 1st step in Mitosis Mitosis begins (cell begins to divide) Centrioles appear and begin to move to the opposite end of the cell Spindle fibers form between the poles.
Metaphase 2nd step in Mitosis Chromatids (or pairs of chromosomes) line up in the middle and attach to spindle fibers
Anaphase 3rd step in Mitosis Chromatids (or pairs of chromosomes) separate and begin to move to opposite ends of the cell.
Telophase 4th step in Mitosis Two new nuclei form. Chromosomes appear as chromatin (spaghetti rather than rods) Mitosis ends
Cytokinesis Occurs after mitosis Cell membrane moves inward to create two daughter cells- each with its own nucleus and identical chromosomes.
