Understanding Bullying and Cyberbullying Among Adolescents
Bullying is harmful behavior involving violence to cause mental or physical pain to others. Forms include physical, verbal, and cyberbullying. Adolescents, especially boys, are often involved. Cyberbullying, via electronic devices, leads to fear and embarrassment. Reasons behind bullying range from differing traits to a desire for acceptance and popularity. Awareness is crucial to combat this issue.

Bullying Bullying Bullying is the behavior and the use of violence by a person or a group in order to cause either mental or physical pain to another individual. We can encounter a lot of different forms and types of bullying. Some of them are the following: Physical bullying (pushes, slaps, punches, kicks) Verbal bullying(abuse ,insults ,humiliation ,intimidation) Cyber-Bullying (chat rooms, videos, sites, recordings, sms, calls, e- mail, aimed at humiliation or threat) School Bullying(happens among students)
Bullying Bullying- -People involved People involved The person who bullies The person who is being bullied Observers (those who are present or aware of the phenomenon, whether students or adults) It has been observed that it frequently occurs during adolescence and that boys are more involved in incidents of physical abuse than girls, who appear to be more involved in incidents of verbal abuse.
Cyber Cyber- -bullying bullying
Cyber Cyber- -bullying bullying Cyber bullying( also known as online bullying)is bullying that takes place over electronic devices ,like mobile phones and computers ,and can occur through social networking sites ,SMS ,e-mail etc. Cyber bullying includes :sending threats/offensive texts , posting negative and mean content about someone, sharing the victim s personal information, hacking their personal internet account and so on . All these can cause fear, embarrassment and humiliation. It is widespread ,especially among teenagers
Causes of bullying Causes of bullying People are often bullied because: they are different from others (due to their appearance, weight, height, disability, gender, culture, race, religion etc.) it has also been observed that adolescents who refuse to conform to the social norms of their age group or friends and want to stand out are often bullied. So, it doesn t mean they have done something wrong
Causes of bullying Causes of bullying The possible reasons why people bully others are the following: they may be targets of bullying or violent behavior themselves to feel superior to others to gain acceptance and to become more popular Having low self-esteem and being jealous of the particular person They have grown up in a violent environment .As a result ,they may consider violence as normal, acceptable behavior etc.
The victim The victim Victims often appear to be mentally and physically weaker, shy students, with less strength, with low self-esteem and confidence, displaying symptoms of depression and anxiety. Students who find it difficult to communicate with their parents. They may come from a low-income family. Victims of bullying are usually passive and quiet .They do not stand up for themselves and they lack assertiveness.

The bully The bully They are often very popular among their peers They usually aim to attack the most vulnerable and sensitive kids, not the confident ones. They lack kindness ,compassion , respect, empathy They don t realize the negative effects of their actions and behavior and how it makes the person being bullied feel.
Feelings Feelings Victim Bully They feel that it is their fault and they put the blame on themselves. Other feelings are: Fear Loneliness Humiliation Worthlessness Low self-esteem Intense stress They don t feel good about themselves but unhappy, so they take it out on people around them They feel that by insulting others ,they can boost their own self-esteem , popularity and power They might seem strong from the outside but in reality they feel insecure, inadequate and inferior.
W Witnesses itnesses Students who prefer to stay away from violence, to remain silent and not to react. Students with weaknesses and possibly fears of being rejected by their group of friends However, in the end they probably feel guilty about not interceding on the victim s behalf. defending and
Ways of dealing with Ways of dealing with bullying bullying - -Victim Victim Cyber-bullying Bullying Surround yourself with people who treat you wonderfully Ignore the bully Speak with people you trust ( your parents, teachers ,friends) Confront the bully by discussing Don t bully back React! Don t remain silent Learn to be assertive Keep your password a secret from other people Report the bully to your service providers and social media sites if things get worse Limit what you post online, especially personal photos and videos Block the bully on all online platforms
Ways of dealing with bullying Ways of dealing with bullying Parents Teachers Witnesses Keep an eye out for signs of bullying Work with teachers ,school staff etc. to address bullying Create healthy anti-bullying habits inside the family Talk to your child about the importance of not bullying and understanding the feelings of others Set a good role model Urge your friends to stop doing it Report the incident to an adult Make sure you do not participate in bullying/cyber-bullying behavior but support and stand up for victims. Educate and raise students' awareness of this issue through discussions and presentations. Inform and involve parents effectively
