TIME MANAGEMENT AND FOCUS Dr. Sarah Tynen The Graduate School CU Boulder
BE KIND. Take lots of breaks. Turn off all media. Make time for creativity.
Water 2. SKELETON Food Sleep Exercise
HOW DO I ESTABLISH MY SKELETON? One focus at a time. Try one new focus every 30 days. Be specific and timely about your focus. I m going to drink 8 glasses of 8 oz cups of water per day. I m going to check in with myself every day at 12 pm and 5 pm to check water intake. Keep yourself accountable. Reward yourself.
3. CUT DISTRACTIONS Turn off your email. Have a pen and blank post- it or paper next to you to write down any other to- do tasks that come to your mind.
4. STRUCTURE Framework with flexibility across time and task. Start work at the same time every day. Write down your 3 Most Important Tasks (MITs). Establish specific tasks with time parameters: I m going to work on the outline for chapter 3 from 9-10 am. I m going to write 500 words of the introduction. I m going to analyze data from 1 interview for 50 minutes.
I get to check my phone when I finish this task! I get to take a walk when I finish this task! I get to close my eyes when I finish this task! I will treat myself when I finish this task!
ACTION PLAN Take it one day at a time. Try a bullet journal. Establish a no-phone goal for yourself. For example: No phone in the bedroom. Change where you charge it. Pick a focus for your skeleton: Water, food, sleep, or exercise. For example: No screens after 8 pm. Yoga every morning. Write down your 3MITs for tomorrow. Decide what time work time starts tomorrow.
