TOEFL EXERCISE 1 FOCUS ON THE SECOND LINE
1. Answer to the questions is PROBABLY and MOSTLY, in the second line but NOT ALL. 2. Listen to both speakers, is you understand the first speaker, that s really good, but you must understand the second line, except for some skills ahead. 3. Try to catch the meaning, not the translation of each word. Meaning needs senses. STRATEGY
Woman : How soon will you be leaving? Man : I m on my way now. Question: WHAT DOES THE MAN MEAN? Answer : a. He is leaving now. Number 1
Man : Was Steve able to get into the house? Woman : I left the door unlocked for him. Question: WHAT DOES THE WOMAN ASSUME STEVE DID? Answer : C. He was able to open the door. Number 2
Man : The Dinner special is roast turkey with mashed potatoes and gravy and apple pie for desert. Woman : That doesn t sound good to me. Question: WHAT DOES THE WOMAN MEAN? Answer : D. She d prefer a different dinner. Number 3
Woman : Could you help me with my physics homework tonight? I m really having trouble with it. Man : Sorry, I m busy tonight. Question: WHAT DOES THE MAN IMPLY? Answer : B. He can t help her tonight. Number 4
Man : What did you think about professor Martin s lecture on the migratory habits of whales? Woman : I couldn t keep my eyes open. Question: WHAT DOES THE WOMAN MEAN? Answer : C. The class was boring. Number 5
Woman : Have this months bills been paid, or is that something we need to take care of now? Man : I paid the phone and the electricity but not the credit cards. Question: WHAT DOES THE MAN MEAN? Answer : A. Not all the bills have been paid. Number 6
Man : Will you be able to get back from running all your errands by 4:00? Woman : I ll be back as quickly as I can. Question: WHAT DOES THE WOMAN SAY THAT SHE LL DO? Answer : D. She ll try to return fast. Number 7

Man : There s a car parked in my spot even though the sign says that this space is reserved. Woman : I guess we ll have to park somewhere else. Question: WHAT DOES THE WOMAN MEAN? Answer : D. They can t park the car there. Number 9
Woman : Do we have enough food for all the guests who are attending the reception this evening? Man : The refrigerator is about to burst. Question: WHAT DOES THE MAN MEAN? Answer : A. There s plenty to eat. Number 10
