The Use and Misuse of
Cosmetic Surgery
Tahnee and James
Cosmetic & Plastic Surgery
Two types: cosmetic surgery and reconstructive plastic surgery
Plastic Surgery can be defined as for either Aesthetic gain or to improve
Functional Ability
Cosmetic surgery aims to improve the aesthetic appearance of a person.
Plastic surgery may include this, however mainly reconstructive surgery
Reconstructive plastic surgery aims to improve the function, however it also
may involve changing the normal appearance
Cosmetic surgery is thought to be “elective surgery” as the patient chooses
to have it
Whilst plastic surgery is understood to mean surgery to reconstruct or
improve appearance after injury or illness
Types of Cosmetic & Plastic
Surgery
It can be used for reconstructive uses, i.e. cleft palate, skin
grafts
Types of elective plastic surgery:
Liposuction
Breast (are the most popular) or Lip augmentation
Nose augmentations
Brow/Face Lifts
Botox

Misuses of Cosmetic Surgery
Society obsessed with looks- making themselves ‘look better,
improve their appearance’
Slows the appearance of aging
Reduce ethnic differences
Mirroring celebrities/idols
Ethical issues of changing “genetic code” and “cheating
naturally predetermined appearances”
Hollywood Influence
Media portrayals of “Before/After” photos, majority
highlighting new found beauty
Incidence of cosmetic surgeries has increased over the past
few years
Elective surgeries to look like “idols”
Continued desire for beauty/youthfulness
Arguments for Elective Surgery
Act of empowerment,
An expression of individual agency.
Explain their decision as alleviating their suffering
An attempt to become ‘normal’ rather than achieve a beauty
ideal
Use of Reconstructive Surgery
Correct defects on the face or body
These include physical birth defects like cleft lips and
palates and ear deformities, traumatic injuries like those
from dog bites or burns, or the aftermath of disease
treatments like rebuilding a woman's breast after surgery for
breast cancer.
Improves self-esteem and confidence for an individual i.e
women who have mastectomies may receive prosthetic
breasts to help with self confidence
For health reasons, i.e. with a cleft lip it alleviates other health
issues such as dental hygiene, breathing difficulties
Things to Consider
Cost is it affordable?
Is it something that can be fixed easily. i.e. instead of
liposuction, weightloss/diet
State of mind of patient
Recovery time
Future health problems
Can lead to addiction
Longevity of the procedure i.e. botox injections may need to
be done regularly
Access to Plastic Surgery
For most procedures it is quite expensive, however some
people resort to ‘cheaper’ methods
Going overseas to find cheaper ways of plastic surgery i.e. in
Thailand, Brazil
People do this as it’s cheaper for them, people around them
are less likely to find out, recovery time is lessened
Most people are unqualified and often use unhygienic
equipment

Cosmetic and plastic surgery serve various purposes, from enhancing aesthetic appearances to correcting physical defects. While cosmetic surgery focuses on improving aesthetics, plastic surgery entails reconstructive procedures. The societal pressure to look better and emulate celebrities can lead to the misuse of cosmetic procedures. Hollywood's influence and the arguments for elective surgery highlight the complexities surrounding these practices. Reconstructive surgery, on the other hand, plays a vital role in correcting physical deformities and improving individuals' self-esteem. Understanding the distinctions between these surgical realms is crucial in navigating the world of cosmetic enhancements.
