business focused on growing citrus trees.

Originated in Orient – Japan and
China

The Camellia was named by
Linnaeus in honor of a Jesuit
priest serving in the Philippines -
Joseph Kamel.
Most popular camellia – camellia
sinesnsis (1700 BC)
1650 - East India company
brought it from China to Europe
So you might say that a camellia
was the origin of the Revolution
which created the United States
as a separate country from Great
Britain.
 
Wilmot was a founding member of the American Camellia
Society, which was established on the University of Florida
campus in 1946.
 
He edited the society’s yearbook through 1949 and died in
1950 at the age of 52. Hume was devastated.
 
In his memory, friends and colleagues from the United
States and abroad donated over 300 rare varieties of
camellias to establish the gardens bearing his name. A
monument to Wilmot Botanical Gardens was unveiled in the
center of the gardens in 1954.
