THE EARLY SETTLERS CAME TO THE UNITED STATES TO
MAKE IT THEIR HOME. BUT THE AMERICAN INDIANS WERE
IN THE WAY OF SETTLEMENTS. THE SETTLERS DECIDED TO
KILL OFF THE BUFFALO BECAUSE THEY WERE THE MAIN
SOURCE OF FOOD, CLOTHING, AND SHELTER FOR THE
INDIANS. THE INDIANS WERE THEN REDUCED IN THEIR
POPULATION IN THE MID WEST. THIS IS AN EXAMPLE OF
HOW THE BISON BECAME EXTINCT.

beginning of the 19th century, the market for buffalo
hide boomed in the United States and Canada as

the period dating from roughly 1820 to 1880, known
as "the Great Slaughter."

The North American Bison, once an endangered species that made a remarkable comeback, faced drastic declines due to human activities. From being integral to Native American life to being exploited for commercial gains and almost facing extinction, the bison's story is a somber reminder of the impact humans can have on wildlife populations.
