The Introduction of His Spiritual Family Jesus identified another family besides His biological family (Matt. 12:46-47) Jesus asked a question about the identity of His family (12:48) Jesus identified His disciples as My mother and My brothers (12:49) Jesus emphasized devotion to another family (12:48-49)
The Wonder of His Spiritual Family In Jesus spiritual family, I get to call God my Father My Father is Jesus Father (John 20:17) I get to talk to my Father any time (Matt. 6:6, 9) He is my Abba, Father (Rom. 8:15; Gal. 4:6) In Jesus spiritual family, I get to be called a child of God With God as my Father, I am His son or daughter (2 Cor. 6:18) What an amazing token of love to be called children of God (1 John 3:1) In Jesus spiritual family, I get to be called brethren by Jesus Since we have the same Father (John 20:17), Jesus is our elder brother Jesus calls us His brethren, and He is not ashamed to do so (Heb. 2:11-12)
The Conditions of Being in His Spiritual Family Jesus said, Whoever does the will of My Father in heaven is My brother and sister and mother (Matt. 12:50; cf. 7:21-27) Jesus said, My mother and My brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it (Luke 8:21; cf. Jas. 1:22-25) Getting into His family requires faith and being baptized (Gal. 3:26-27) One must be born again (i.e., baptized) into His family (John 3:3-5; 1 Pet. 1:23) As a child in God s family, I must be obedient (1 Pet. 1:14; Mark 3:35; cf. Eph. 6:1)
The Identification of His Spiritual Family Jesus spiritual family is His church (1 Tim. 3:15), kingdom (John 3:3-5), body (Col. 1:18) We all become part of His family through the same birth (John 3:3-5; 1 Cor. 12:13) In His family/church, I have brothers and sisters (1 Tim. 5:1-2) In His family/church, we are responsible for one another (Gal. 5:13; 6:1, 2, 10)
The Priority of His Spiritual Family Jesus prioritized His spiritual family over His biological family (Matt. 12:46-50) Jesus said that His spiritual family was more blessed (Luke 11:27-28) Jesus said that being part of His spiritual family would create divisions in biological families and His spiritual family must take priority (Matt. 10:34-39) Jesus said that we must seek first His spiritual family (Matt. 6:33) Jesus said that I must serve His/my brethren to enter heaven (Matt. 25:40)
The Eternality of His Spiritual Family His family has their names registered in heaven (Heb. 12:23) His family members are joint heirs with Christ (Rom. 8:16-17) His family will be delivered to the Father at the end of time (1 Cor. 15:24)
