The Sermon on the Mount: Words of Wisdom
In Matthew 22:37-40, Jesus emphasizes the greatest commandments of loving God and loving others. The Sermon on the Mount further elaborates on teachings about relationships, retaliation, and the law of the kingdom. It contrasts the Old Testament concept of "eye for an eye" with a call for non-resistance to evil. The passage discusses the establishment of cities of refuge in Numbers 35:9-12, providing protection for accidental manslayers. These teachings reflect on the importance of compassion, forgiveness, and justice in one's spiritual journey.

Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. (Matthew 22:37 40 KJV)

And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloke also. And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain. Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away. (Matthew 5:38 42 KJV)
The Sermon On The Mount Staying On The Mountain The Sermon The Law Of The Kingdom Retaliation (Matt 5:38-42) Eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, Burning for burning, wound for wound, stripe for stripe. (Exodus 21:24 25 KJV) If a man injures his neighbor, just as he has done, so it shall be done to him: fracture for fracture, eye for eye, tooth for tooth; just as he has injured a man, so it shall be inflicted on him. (Leviticus 24:19 20 NAS95) And thine eye shall not pity; but life shall go for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot. (Deuteronomy 19:21 KJV)
Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them: When you cross the Jordan into the land of Canaan, then you shall appoint cities to be cities of refuge for you, that the manslayer who kills any person accidentally may flee there. They shall be cities of refuge for you from the avenger, that the manslayer may not die until he stands before the congregation in judgment. (Numbers 35:9 12 NKJV)
These six cities shall be for refuge for the children of Israel, for the stranger, and for the sojourner among them, that anyone who kills a person accidentally may flee there. But if he strikes him with an iron implement, so that he dies, he is a murderer; the murderer shall surely be put to death. And if he strikes him with a stone in the hand, by which one could die, and he does die, he is a murderer; the murderer shall surely be put to death. Or if he strikes him with a wooden hand weapon, by which one could die, and he does die, he is a murderer; the murderer shall surely be put to death. The avenger of blood himself shall put the murderer to death; when he meets him, he shall put him to death. If he pushes him out of hatred or, while lying in wait, hurls something at him so that he dies, or in enmity he strikes him with his hand so that he dies, the one who struck him shall surely be put to death. He is a murderer. The avenger of blood shall put the murderer to death when he meets him. (Numbers 35:15 21 NKJV)

The Sermon On The Mount Staying On The Mountain The Sermon The Law Of The Kingdom Retaliation (Matt 5:38-42) A slap is not an act of devastation, but one of insult. I believe Jesus uses this for a reason! (Acts 23:1-5) One s coat is an article of clothing (material possession) Compels (forces you to go a mile) Our submission to these things is more than just obligatory but voluntary (willful)
The Sermon On The Mount Staying On The Mountain The Sermon The Law Of The Kingdom Retaliation (Matt 5:38-42) Jesus is not just saying take it because I told you too, but take it because I will take for you and have taken it from you Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth: Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously: (1 Peter 2:22 23 KJV)
But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ. Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith: That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death; If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead. (Philippians 3:7 11 KJV)
And they agreed with him, and when they had called for the apostles and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. So they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for His name. And daily in the temple, and in every house, they did not cease teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ. (Acts 5:40 42 NKJV)
The Sermon On The Mount Staying On The Mountain The Sermon The Law Of The Kingdom Enemies (Matt 5:43-48)
Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust. For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same? And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so? Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect. (Matthew 5:43 48 KJV) Matt 5:21-22; 38-42 Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the LORD. (Leviticus 19:18 KJV)
The Sermon On The Mount Staying On The Mountain The Sermon The Law Of The Kingdom Love thy neighbor as thyself (Matt 19:19; Mark 12:31; Luke 10:27; Rom 13:9; Gal 5:14; James 2:8)
The Sermon On The Mount Staying On The Mountain The Sermon The Law Of The Kingdom Enemies (Matt 5:43-48) Hate your enemy is not found in the Law! Do not I hate them, O LORD, that hate thee? and am not I grieved with those that rise up against thee? I hate them with perfect hatred: I count them mine enemies. (Psalm 139:21 22 KJV) Jesus compares loving only those who love you and greeting only those who greet you is no better than a tax collector! This was definite slight to the pharisees
The Sermon On The Mount Staying On The Mountain The Sermon The Law Of The Kingdom Enemies (Matt 5:43-48) Hate your enemy is not found in the Law! What is meant by the term is explained in Jesus clarification of the Law! (Vss. 44-48) We are not only, not to hate them, but to love them, do good to them, and pray forthem We are to be perfect as our father is perfect in dealing with His enemies!
Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men. If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men. Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head. Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good. (Romans 12:17 21 KJV) If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink: For thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head, and the LORD shall reward thee. (Proverbs 25:21 22 KJV)
The Sermon On The Mount Staying On The Mountain The Sermon The Law Of The Kingdom Enemies (Matt 5:43-48) Be perfectasyour Father in heaven is perfect teleios brought to completion; fully accomplished, fully developed, complete, entire, as opposed to what is partial and limited Cf (Phil 3:9-15).. Murder, lust, hate, deception, and retaliation are not characteristics of God and must be rejected as such! We cannot attempt to justify them in anyway
For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 5:18 20 KJV)
