What risks com
with using
electromagnets?
Electromagnets
When electrical charges flow in a
wire, a magnetic field is formed
around the wire.
The larger the current, the
stronger the magnetic field will be.
When a current stops flowing, there
is no magnetic field.

Uses of Electromagnets

Electromagnets are used for many different things.
When the button of a doorbell is pushed, it acts as a switch and closes
an electrical circuit.
The electromagnet inside becomes active, and attracts a small metal
arm towards it.
As soon as the arm moves, the circuit breaks, so the arm is no longer
attracted to the magnet and falls back down, hitting a small metal plate.

The sound of the metal arm repeatedly and rapidly hitting the metal
plate causes the buzzing sound of the doorbell. This is also how electric
school bells work!

How Do They Work?
The scrap metal magnet makes use of the fact that
electromagnets can be switched on and off.

The magnet is activated to attract the scrap metal
from one place and carry it to another.

Then, the magnet can be switched off, releasing
the metal so that it drops into its new location.

How Do They Work?
Electric motors convert electrical energy into movement energy.

When the electromagnet inside a motor is switched on, its north pole is
attracted to another magnet.

However, at the same time, its south pole is repelled by another magnet.
This causes the electromagnet to turn.

This continues to happen, so the electromagnet keeps rotating as it is
attracted and repelled. This spinning movement is what powers the motor.

How Do They Work?
An electromagnetic door lock consists of an
electromagnet fitted to the door frame, and a
metal plate attached to the door.

When the electromagnet is switched on, the metal
plate on the door is attracted to it.

The force between the electromagnet and the
metal plate is strong enough to hold the door
closed.

How Do They Work?
Create a minimum of 2 paragraphs to describe the uses of
electromagnets in every day life. Use the examples in the video or
on the slides.
