  1. Case 7 for teaching package on domestic violence Name of presenter and institution

  2. Honour as a Factor in Domestic Violence in India

  3. Aims and objectives To demonstrate that a woman s sense of honour can impact on a case of domestic violence To demonstrate the role of drug or alcohol abuse or addiction in domestic violence

  4. Case details A 39 year old lady in India has been married to a Police Constable for 22 years They have 2 daughters aged 19 & 21 years but NO son The lady has attended her GP on and off with bruising and on one occasion a fractured forearm After direct and indirect questioning she confessed that she was facing Domestic Violence Her husband had become alcoholic and had started an illicit affair with another woman to fulfill his dream of getting a son He worked in the crime branch of the police force and was therefore used to regularly seeing violence in society The daughters felt powerless to help their mother and were intent on getting out of the household

  5. Case details Money was in short supply as her husband was also supporting the other woman in his life Her GP counselled the lady and interviewed the daughters Her husband would NOT accompany her to the clinic The lady refused any sort of help as she could not make this a police case because of her husband s job. She also did not want her neighbours to know or in any way jeopardised her daughter s chances of an arranged marriage However, she was sure that this decision was right despite continuing violence. She had no hopes for herself but wanted to ensure her daughter s happiness. She would never consider divorce or consider separation. Rather than dishonour she would be prepared to die

  6. Learning points Some women refuse any help. For them it is a question of honour above all else. They cannot accept being socially ostracised The woman s husband was a policeman dealing constantly with crime and acts of violence. This made him susceptible to alcoholism which subsequently made him take out his frustrations at home. Counselling in this sort of case is difficult. If this case had been registered against the constable he would have lost his job and his family would have lost everything Alcoholism is so often the cause of domestic violence. In India there is Prohibition and alcohol sale is regulated. However, this has NOT reduced alcoholism since the laws were enacted 67 years ago
