The Five Witnesses to Jesus in John 5:31-47
Hostility towards Jesus arose as the Jews sought to kill Him for violating the Sabbath, claiming equality with God, duplicating God's works, giving life, executing judgment, and raising the dead. The witnesses to Jesus include Himself, John the Baptist, His works, the Father, and the Scriptures, all testifying to His divinity and mission despite opposition.

THE FIVE WITNESSES TO JESUS JOHN 5:31-47
Hostility Towards Jesus 16. For this reason the Jews persecuted Jesus, and sought to kill Him, because He had done these things on the Sabbath. 17. But Jesus answered them, My Father has been working until now, and I have been working. 18. Therefore the Jews sought all the more to kill Him, because He not only broke the Sabbath, but also said that God was His Father, making Himself equal with God.
Why these Jews were seeking to kill Jesus. He violated the Sabbath (v. 16). He made Himself equal with God (v. 18). He duplicated the works of God (v. 19). He claimed power to give life (v. 21). He claimed authority from God to execute judgment (v. 27). He claimed to raise men from the dead (vs. 28-29).
1. Himself If I bear witness of Myself, My witness is not true (John 5:31). One witness shall not rise against a man concerning any iniquity or any sin that he commits; by the mouth of two or three witnesses the matter shall be established (Deut. 19:15). The Five Witnesses To Jesus
2. John the Baptist John 5:32-35 John the Baptist claimed Jesus was greater than himself (John 1:26-27). He also claimed Jesus was the Lamb of God and the Son of God (John 1:29, 34). The Five Witnesses To Jesus
3. His Works John 5:36 These miracles verified His claims (Acts 2:22). Honest Jews accepted this testimony. John 3:2; 7:31 The Five Witnesses To Jesus
4. The Father John 5:37-38 These Jews were not in a position to respond favorably to the Father s testimony. They had never heard or seen Him. They did not allow His word to abide in them. The Five Witnesses To Jesus
5. The Scriptures John 5:39-47 The Jews accepted the authority of the Scriptures. Had a great love and respect for them. They carefully and thoroughly investigated them. The Five Witnesses To Jesus
these are they which testify of Me The purpose of the Old Testament was to point to Jesus. Luke 24:27, 44-45 Galatians 3:24 These Jews knew the words of Scripture, but they did not know the Word of Scripture. Do we?
these are they which testify of Me They did not believe the Scriptures (vs. 45-57). Moses pointed them to Jesus (Deut. 18:18-19). In their rejection of Jesus, they had Moses accusing and condemning them through their own Scriptures. If we fail to believe and obey, the words of Jesus will condemn us (John 12:48).
