The Eucharist: Offering Jesus and the Sanctus

CHAPTER 22: OFFERING JESUS TO THE FATHER
LESSON 1

“HE HAS NO NEED, LIKE THOSE HIGH PRIESTS, TO OFFER SACRIFICES DAILY, FIRST FOR HIS
OWN SINS AND THEN FOR THOSE OF THE PEOPLE; HE DID THIS ONCE FOR ALL WHEN HE
OFFERED UP HIMSELF.”

–HEBREWS 7:27
LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST

Most important part of the Mass
During this moment Jesus offers His life to the Father through the priest
Comes after the Liturgy of the Word
During the Offertory the gifts are brought forward to the altar
THE OFFERTORY

We take the bread and wine to the priest which nourish us and keep us alive
Offering the bread and wine to God is a symbol of offering our very lives to
Him
We also offer money in the collection
We show we offer our lives and hearts to Him
We offer all we think, do, and say
All of these gifts will then be joined with Jesus, our best gift

How can you participate in the collections and Offertory?

LESSON 2

“HE HAS NO NEED, LIKE THOSE HIGH PRIESTS, TO OFFER SACRIFICES DAILY, FIRST FOR HIS
OWN SINS AND THEN FOR THOSE OF THE PEOPLE; HE DID THIS ONCE FOR ALL WHEN HE
OFFERED UP HIMSELF.”

–HEBREWS 7:27
THE SANCTUS

The Holy, Holy, Holy (Sanctus)
We sing or say this together
Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts.
Heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.
We kneel after the Sanctus in reverence and awe of God coming to our
midst.

THE CONSECRATION

The Priest prays over the gifts and this is when the

bread and wine become Jesus
Occurs when the Priest says the words of Jesus: “This is My Body” and “This
is My Blood” over bread and wine during the Mass
When the bread and wine changes to Jesus it is called
transubstantiation
Through the words and actions of the Priest, the bread and wine are
changed into the
Body
 and
Blood
,
Soul
 and
Divinity
 of Jesus
After the Consecration, there is no more bread and wine
Jesus is truly present under the
appearance
 of bread and wine
When the bells are rung, it reminds us that Jesus is present

CLOSING

Pray together the Anima Christi:
Soul of Christ, sanctify me. Body of Christ, save me. Blood of Christ,
inebriate me.
Water from Christ's side, wash me. Passion of Christ, strengthen me. O
good Jesus, hear me.
Within Thy wounds hide me. Separated from Thee let me never be. From
Thy malignant enemy, defend me. At the hour of my death, call me. To
come to Thee, bid me.
That I may praise Thee with Thy saints and with Thy angels forever and ever.
Amen.

LESSON 3

“HE HAS NO NEED, LIKE THOSE HIGH PRIESTS, TO OFFER SACRIFICES DAILY, FIRST FOR HIS

OFFERED UP HIMSELF.”

–HEBREWS 7:27
THE BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST

Offered up to the Father as a perfect sacrifice
The priest takes the Sacred Host and chalice and lifts them up to Heaven
We bow our heads because Christ is truly present
The Consecration renews Christ’s gift on Calvary
We are called to unite ourselves with Christ in this

offering to the Father
Through the Mass, His Body and Blood are offered

through the Priest and the people
What actions should we do during the Consecration?
Why is this part of the Mass so important?
THE BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST

We receive Jesus in the Holy Eucharist
The Priest says, “The Body of Christ”
We respond, “Amen”
Amen means, “I believe” and is one of our greatest professions of faith
