school where dour-faced
teachers give joyless lessons.
He would rather like to be
outdoors and enjoy the
summer day. He pleads with
his parents to rescue him from
the drudgery of school.

I love to rise (
জেগে উঠা
) in a summer morn,
When the birds sing on every tree;
The distant(
দূরবর্তী
) huntsman(
শিকারী
) winds his horn(
বা
ি
),
And the skylark (
ভরত পাখি
) sings with me:
O what sweet company! (
সঙ্গী
)
Stanza- 1/6
 
But to go to school in a summer morn,-
O it drives(
তাড়িয়ে দেয়া
) all joy away!
Under a cruel (
নিষ্ঠুর
) eye outworn(
অচল
),
The little ones spend the day
In sighing(
দীর্ঘশ্বাস ফেলা
) and dismay(
হতাশা
).
Stanza- 2/6
 
Ah then at times I drooping(ঢলে পড়া) sit,
And spend many an anxious(উদ্বিগ্ন) hour;
Nor in my book can I take delight,
Nor sit in learning's bower(বাসা),
Worn(ক্লান্ত) through with dreary(বিষণ্ণ) shower(বর্ষণ).

How can the bird that is born for joy
Sit in a cage and sing?
How can a child, when fears(ভয়) annoy(বিরক্ত করা),
But droop his tender(কচি/কোমল) wing(ডানা),
And forget his youthful(তারুণ্যেদীপ্ত) spring!
Stanza- 4/6
 
O father and mother if buds(
কুঁড়ি
) are nipped(
বিনষ্ট করা),
And blossoms(
পুস্প
) blown away;
And if the tender plants are stripped(
টুকরা করা
)
Of their joy in the springing day,
By sorrow and care's dismay,-
Stanza- 5/6
 
How shall the summer arise(
আবির্ভূত হওয়া
) in joy,
Or the summer fruits appear(
আসা
?
Or how shall we gather(
পাওয়া
) what griefs
destroy,
Or bless the mellowing(
পরিপক্ব
) year,
When the blasts(
আঘাত
) of winter appear(
হানা
দেয়া
)?

Summary:
 
In this poem, a young boy expresses his unhappiness with
his school, lessons and teachers. He tries to enjoy
summer’s days, instead of going to school. But his all joys
fade away as he has to go to school where he spends
weary hours. He finds no delight in or attraction for his
study. He considers himself a bird that can’t be caged. So,
he pleads his parents to rescue him from the drudgery of
school. If children are forced to stay at school, they will
fail to learn anything.
