GENESIS 1-3: PRIMITIVE & NAVE SCIENCE Their Scientific world-view contrasting with ours: o canopy/firmament, vs atmosphere o moon as a light not a reflector of sun o some basic vegetation before there is a sun o no hint the earth circles the sun
HOWEVER GENESIS 1-3 is POPULARLY MISREAD CREDITED WITH MANY THINGS IT DOES NOT SAY POPULARLY MISREAD & IT DOES NOT SAY IMPORTANT however you understand Genesis 1-11 - because they have led to DISCREDITING a powerful section of Scripture that summarizes God s character, human nature, and the creation with great insight just as it is understood throughout the OT & NT Here are 4 - many are possible - examples of misreading before I get to my main emphasis today (very quickly)
7 DAYS OF CREATION Literarily & Literally was never meant never meant to claim 7 x 24 hour eras (1) Literarily & Literally (YOM YOM) (1)1:4-6 day is defined without a sun as however long it is light as opposed to dark (2)1:16-18 day is defined as however long it is daytime as opposed to nighttime a period of time which varies with the seasons. AND, as 24 hour day. Ei. - a day A day within
7 DAYS OF CREATION Literarily & Literally was never meant never meant to claim 7 x 24 hour eras (2) Literarily & Literally (YOM YOM) (3) 2:4 - Hebrew YOM singular to summarize and include the entire 7 days or eras of creation. So YOM cannot in author s mind be 24 hr periods if seven days = one day
7 DAYS OF CREATION Literarily & Literally was never meant never meant to claim 7 x 24 hour eras Literarily & Literally (YOM YOM) (3) (4) 1:26-27 and 2:5-26 this author is not literarily inept! -author has humans created in the last part of day 6 after the large animals - Then tells us that this day/yom included the human serving and keeping the Garden, talking with God, naming all the animals, becoming lonely, creation is not good yet 2:18, celebrating the nude woman in front of him, and being married to her by God. BUSY 6 hours???? - A literal reading is NOT 6 x 24 day reading!
Genesis 1-2 is not anti mean process as opposed to purposeless: not anti- -evolution evolution if by that we Things process from chaos to more and more order through many eras/days Things move from non-living to living And, in 1:11, 20, and 24 ELOHIM commands the earth and the waters to bring forth life versus fiat creation and Life explodes onto the scene - swarms with swarms and multiplication
GENESIS 1-3 is NOT ANTI NOT ANTI- -ENVIRONMENTAL ENVIRONMENTAL 1:26-31 -yes, humans are told to co-dominate in the gift of creation under God s authority 2:9 - but they are also told to serve/keep the garden of creation Stewardship of God s gift is central throughout. 3:15-25 as well as ch. 4-11 claim in various ways that creation responds badly when humans do bad things in it and to it
WOMAN WOMAN is not subordinate not subordinate in CREATION (1) (1)Creation is very good only once woman is included, but is not good yet when she is not 1:26-31 and 2:18 (2) Helper used of the woman - is not a pejorative or subordinating word in OT (2:18-20) in fact it is most often used of God who is our helper and our help. hardly subordinate!
WOMAN WOMAN is not more guilty relationship with God and one another (2) more guilty of messing up our (3) Not more guilty - the male is with her in the temptation and sits by and watches without saying or doing a thing! To see if she dies? When nothing seems to happen to her he joins right in (3:6). And, he is the one God rips in foretelling the consequences of what they have just done.
Neither is the woman created to be ruled created to be ruled over over (3) 3:16-17 - your man will rule over you is not a prescription of God s ideal, but a description of God telling them the relational consequences of what they have done that will now cause alienation in all of their relationships. Not meant to be prescriptive any more than labor pains, weeds and sweat meant humans shouldn t try to overcome these consequences. - (How well have we have done so is a different question!)

The SUPERNATURAL/NATURAL worldview LEADS to a mostly distant view of God LEADS to seeing God as mostly inactive and not really present except occasionally intervening in a machine like nature LEADS to the GOD OF THE GAPS God only explains what we do not yet understand LEADS to each new thing we humans learn pushing God outside of creation and outside of human history
ENTIRE BIBLE ENTIRE BIBLE INCLUDING GENESIS 1 INCLUDING GENESIS 1- -3 3 - a very different claim very different claim about God s Revelation YHWH ELOHIM ( LORD GOD ) is CREATOR, all of the rest is CREATION HUMANS are BOTH creation and creators Co-creators, co-rulers, stewards of a gift EARTH/DUST ANIMAL (living soul) and IMAGE & LIKENESS OF GOD/Spirit of Go YHWH ELOHIM is ALWAYS involved with present to - the CREATION including us Humans
YHWH ELOHIM YHWH ELOHIM (LORD GOD) IS: PERSONAL the source of our personhood RELATIONAL everything & everyone is related to God PURPOSEFUL creation is just the beginning of a big project RESPONSIVE - willing to accommodate our needs & our failures as humans as persons PRESENT All the time - (though in their naivety the early humans do not know that this is true about YHWH ELOHIM) are we much better, or do we too think God is only present when we see God?
WE HUMANS TOO are meant to be HUMANS TOO are meant to be: PERSONAL reflecting God s breath / image in us RELATIONAL to God, others, self, and creation - always PURPOSEFUL invited to join God s great human project RESPONSIVE to God, other humans, and creation PRESENT to one another, self, and creation
PERSONAL CREATOR GOD (1) Can interact with Non-Living part of Creation without interfering just enjoying it & Can influence & intervene when God chooses to do so this is what PERSONS DO! Can interact with Non-human animal life without interfering just enjoying it & Can influence & intervene when God chooses to do so - this is what PERSONS DO!
PERSONAL CREATOR GOD is ALWAYS RELATING TO OTHER PERSONS (2) God can be present and relating to human persons without interfering or intervening & God can choose at times to influence or intervene with other persons for God s own purposes or in response to our choices and actions - this is WHAT PERSONS DO!
PERSONAL CREATOR GOD is ALWAYS RELATING TO OTHER PERSONS (3) Eg s NOT INTERVENE event though PRESENT & RELATING We/God often are present among persons and do not intentionally intervene Sometimes we/God even allow our children to make mistakes rather than control them We/God often accommodate to the mistakes of children and friends the mistakes we did not intervene in -THIS IS WHAT PERSONS DO
LIKE US PERSONAL CREATOR GOD is ALWAYS RELATING TO OTHER PERSONS (3) Eg s sometimes we/God do INTERVENE and/or INFLUENCE We/God also choose to influence and intervene with strangers, family, friends etc. for our own purposes. We even influence and intervene sometimes without the other PERSON even knowing it individual & corporate -THIS IS WHAT PURPOSEFUL, RELATIONAL, PERSONS DO!!!!

PROBLEM: HOW CAN A GOOD, CARING, PERSONAL, PROBLEM: HOW CAN A GOOD, CARING, PERSONAL, RELATIONAL, PRESENT CREATOR RELATIONAL, PRESENT CREATOR GOD ALLOW GOD ALLOW ? ? Genesis 3? - bent relationship with God, others, self, creation? Genesis 4? - suffering and death of the young & innocent? Genesis 4-11? further degrading of all relationships The History recorded in OT? The Human History not in Bible that we know about? The Human History reported in our news every day? The History recorded in NT? The HURTS & SUFFERING YOU & LOVED ONES HAVE EXPERIENCED? The Pain God is Experiencing?
Problem is so big We often prefer the SUPERNATURAL/NATURAL falsehood Because the Personal, Purposeful Present, God AND we humans have so much to answer for Because the Personal, Purposeful, Present God sometimes leads us to scream - My God, My God, why have you forsaken us? - My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?
BIBLICAL WRITERS NEVER STOP WRESTLING WITH THIS DILEMMA Genesis to Revelation Never pretend this frustration is not real Never pretend it doesn t haunt them and us the writer of Revelation, like the Psalmist long before, him still says that even the faithful who have died and are in God s presence are still saying HOW MUCH LONGER? At times, it is excruciating for them and for us
COMMUNION: However, the New Testament writers do claim: (1) We do not yet see everything in submission to humans as the Creator God purposed but WE DO SEE JESUS crowned with the glory and honor of God determined to bring many sons and daughters to this same glory and honor that God has already given him (Hebrews 2:5-18) -THE CREATOR S PERSONAL AMAZING GRACE IS BEGINNING TO WIN!
COMMUNION: (2) the NT writers do claim that we can taste the PERSONAL PRESENCE of the Creator God and God s Son Jesus in the WINE of Creation oWine that represents the injustices and suffering and shedding of human life blood oWine that also is a foretaste of the joy of God s final great banquet when GOD IS FULLY PERSONAL & FULLY PRESENT and SO ARE WE The CREATOR S PERSONAL AMAZING GRACE will win
COMMUNION: (3) the NT writers do claim that we can taste the Personal Presence of the Creator God and God s Son Jesus in the BREAD of Creation: oBread that represents the injustices and suffering of a broken, suffering human body oBread that also the bread of life and is a foretaste of the joy of God s final great banquet when GOD IS FULLY PERSONAL & FULLY PRESENT and SO ARE WE THE CREATOR S PERSONAL AMAZING GRACE will win
