Time to level up! A good idea to skilfully use embedded clauses: It is not that fireworks are a nuisance per se, however, in the wrong hands they are potentially dangerous, even lethal.
Have a look at these different headlines and openings. Which ones do you think are the most effective? Why? Headlines: 1 Is Prison Really That Tough? 2 Should Prisons Be Tougher? 3 Prisons: Hotel or Punishment? 4 Is Prison a Real Deterrent? 5 Over-Populated Prisons: Do We Need to Rethink Criminal Punishment? Openings: A Being an ex-Prison Warden, I know that the conditions of prisons are nowhere near as comfortable as the media suggest. The general public are bombarded by images of games consoles, televisions, pool tables and reduced sentences. However, B I think burglary is an awful crime. I was once burgled. The criminal was never caught. I have a right to be angry about this. Even if they had been caught it would have been a very small punishment. C Disgracefully, prisons are too soft on criminals. Activate: Take a look at how a persuasive paragraph is Activate: Take a look at how a persuasive paragraph is put together: put together: Prisons: Hotel or Punishment? As a victim of crime who is afraid to leave their own house, I am furious to know that criminals are not being properly punished. I understand that the Police have a difficult job and that they cannot solve every crime. However, when they successfully prosecute these criminals they do serve their whole sentence. Where I live the majority of houses are owned by elderly people. At night our estate feels dangerous, even lawless. I can only think that this is because there is no fear of being punished. If we ensure that criminals are punished then it might act as a deterrent for some of these people. I am also extremely concerned about the fact that young people are being drawn into crime too. When I think about all the places I could visit when I was a child and compare that to now there is little for young people to do. Although this could also be an excuse for poor parenting.
