Discussion:
Remind yourself of
some of the ways that
you can argue your
point of view or
persuade someone
else to change theirs.

Can you remember
some of these
techniques?

Learning Objective: to plan and write with a sophisticated point of view, using wide vocabulary and variation.

Time to level up!

Embedded clauses
:
Sadly
,
our elderly neighbours,
despite the council’s best efforts
,
feel helpless and
abandoned.

Semi-colons
:
(use them to link two independent clause
sentences on the same topic)
Money is the root of all evil; I don’t believe the reverse is
necessarily true.

Time to level up!

A good idea to skilfully use embedded clauses:

It is not that fireworks are a nuisance
per se
,
however
, in
the wrong hands they are potentially dangerous,
even
lethal
.

Prisons: Hotel or Punishment?

As a victim of crime who is afraid to leave their own house, I am furious to know
that criminals are not being properly punished. I understand that the Police have a
difficult job and that they cannot solve every crime. However, when they
successfully prosecute these criminals – they do serve their whole sentence.
Where I live the majority of houses are owned by elderly people. At night our
estate feels dangerous, even lawless. I can only think that this is because there is
no fear of being punished. If we ensure that criminals are punished then it might
act as a deterrent for some of these people. I am also extremely concerned about
the fact that young people are being drawn into crime too. When I think about all
the places I could visit when I was a child and compare that to now – there is little
for young people to do. Although this could also be an excuse for poor parenting.
