COMMUNITY AGREEMENTS As we explore and learn together through our sessions, your contributions to the conversation are valued and you are invited to fully participate as your best self. In doing so, please keep these five agreements in mind: Listen with curiosity Be aware of your power and privilege and how to use it. Enter as the learner: Lead with inquiry and phrase thoughts as questions oppose to judgements. Speak from your own experience; use I statements Don t assume identity and do not ask individuals to speak for their (perceived) social group. Assume good will but remember intent does not equal impact. Be accountable to how the words / actions are received. Lean into discomfort Practice self-care and community care A successful session looks different for everyone.
SERIES & SESSION OBJECTIVES The 5-Session Series Objectives Recognize Racism (i.e., BIPOC racial oppression and/or White Supremacy) Respond to Racism Work to create an anti-racist practice, environment, and culture Session Objective for Sessions 1 - 3 Raise awareness/critical consciousness about race as a social construct and self-awareness about one s role in maintaining and perpetuating racism. Session 4 Objective Develop skills & efficacy and implement action to address micro-aggressions Session 5 Objective Identify action steps to integrate anti-racism into participants daily practice to create and sustain an anti-racist organizational environment and culture.
ExampleIdentified Problem: The lack of BIPOC voices in the planning process for the MLK Day celebration of a particular community. Cause What causes the problem? Intervention What intervention would address the cause? SMART Goal Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Time-bound Accountability Who is responsible for initiating and follow-up? Email by a white committee member centering their whiteness and reflecting white fragility when responding to BIPOC members ideas. 3) Develop a white caucus to review actions. Read the article about caucusing by 12/31/20. Secretary will send an article today and will check-in with everyone on 12/31/20. Practices No mandatory anti-racism training for the committee members. 1) Have mandated anti- racism training. Identify and schedule training to occur no later than Feb 2021. The Chair of the Board will identify possible trainers and will present options to the Board in early January. Policies Resistance to talking about white supremacy. 2) Develop & embed anti- racism approach throughout all meetings, events, and communications Identify and hire facilitator for group retreat to follow- up on anti-racism training and create anti-racist approach to be adopted by association by April 2021. The Co-chair will send an email to finalize date of group retreat to all members. Culture
