Success Story of Hornby Bus Community Service

CVRD - Feasibility Study, submitted October 31, 2018 I am excited to be able to confidently put forward the recommendation that the Hornby Bus community bus service keep running. Transit is needed on Hornby Island and the established Comox Valley transit does not adequately provide transit service to this service area. Specific recommendations: - Establish a local bus steering committee - Hire a manager/lead driver - Review route, stops and schedule - Liaise with MOTI regarding quality of stops - Fix the muffler on the Blue Bus - Improve reliability relief bus, radios, interactive phone app. - Improve promotion of the service to inform people better - Seek collaboration with the School District bussing - Work with Denman Works regarding a cross-Denman connector - CVRD increase funding to $40k for 2019 operations - Seek funding for an electric bus
2019 Results: Ridership: Up 60% from 2018 for the same period Average 10 riders/hour, a good standard Financials Fare box and bus supporter pins raised approx. $2700., while sponsorships fell off. Public support dramatically improved
Tax revenues from Hornby Island, to Transit: $63,000/year CVRD support to Island transit: 2017: 0 (Hornby Bus Started) 2018: $10k & $8k feasibility study 2019: $20k (note the 2018 CVRD Feasibility Study recommended $40K towards the Hornby bus) 2020: $20k committed 2021: $40K LOOKING FORWARD: ELECTRIC BUSES from the Islands Gas Tax Money SUPPORT A CROSS-DENMAN CONNECTOR INCREASE FUNDING COLLABORATION WITH S.D. 71 the route to year round bus service
