Speech and Debate Contingency Group July 27, 2020

What we know today: OSAA and many others have developed and released sport and activity COVID guidance. OSAA guidance is tied to county phase designation. Volleyball, Soccer, and XC are scheduled to start on Aug 17 with first contest on Sept 23. Deadline to start Football is Sept 28. Governor Brown is scheduled to release re-opening school matrix/criteria this week.
What we know today: International coalition aerosol study has issued preliminary results waiting for rec s related to Speech and Debate. Regardless of how we choose to proceed it will not be a normal season.
What we can anticipate: Liability and financial concerns will impact decisions on how Districts proceed Facilities Practice/Competition Travel Fragmentation will occur parents and kids will explore every opportunity. Forthcoming decisions on educational models by districts will have impact on decision makers.
Framework What adjustments if any need to be made to the current season calendar? What does in-person practice look like? Is it prudent to bring students from all over the state to one site for competitions? Should entries be limited? Reduce number of qualifiers to Championships?
Meeting #1 Focus Questions Sports/Activities that can transition into the online model can work in the current environment. Is it possible to conduct an entire Speech and Debate season without having a single in-person competition?
