  2. What Badges does this go toward? 1. Design a model of something you would like to build. The design can be on paper or a computer. Creative Badge Builders Badge 2. Make a list of all the things you are going to need to build your idea. Construct something 3. Build your idea using the things you need. Your model could be made using building blocks, gears or recycled items such as toilet roll tubes or cardboard boxes. 4. Explain to your Beaver Leader how long your build took to finish, if anything went wrong and what you would change if you built it again.

  3. What is a Rube Goldberg Machine A Rube Goldberg machine, named after American cartoonist Rube Goldberg, is a chain reaction-type machine or contraption intentionally designed to perform a simple task in an indirect and overly complicated way. Usually, these machines consist of a series of simple unrelated devices; the action of each triggers the initiation of the next, eventually resulting in achieving a stated goal.

  4. So what are they? An overcomplicated way to achieve a simple task such as opening a cat flap. Knocking something over into a bowl or box (putting something away)? Or perhaps flicking a switch or popping a balloon? You can use anything from Lego to train tracks, books, CDs, dominos, kitchen roll centres, marbles, bouncy balls, cars and so on! The aim is to experiment and have fun

  7. Now for the Challenge Can You Create Your Own Rube Goldberg Machine? Step 1: Design the machine Step 2: Work out what equipment you need to build it Step 3: Build it (and change the design as required) Step 4: Show it to everyone else For extra skill you might want to try and get everything as close as possible to 30 seconds to make it a competition?
