2 What Is Soft Matter? Condensed matter physical systems that are deformed or structurally altered by external forces Examples: liquids, colloids, polymers, foams, gels, granular materials, liquid crystals, and many biological materials Structures are typically greater than microscopic (i.e. atoms) but smaller than mesoscopic Additional topics include equilibrium, order/disorder, self-assembly, fracture behavior, etc.
3 ERINC and Soft Matter There is current alignment with ERINC, as many novel optical and nanoscale materials are derived from soft matter concepts Expertise of current members is appropriate (biology, chemistry, physics, engineering, computer science, mathematics) Examples (from current list on ERINC website) Fuel cell nanocatalysis Nanotemplate processes Brush-on and self-assembled nano-fibers NanoCLEAR anti-reflective coatings
