3.1

Macbeth meets Banquo
What is the significance of the following lines?

Jonathan Peel JLS 2016
Murderers: Discontent
In 3.2 we see guilt and conscience worry Lady
Macbeth and Macbeth
What is the thought behind these quotations?
Jonathan Peel JLS 2016
Tis safer to be that
which we destroy,
than by destruction to
dwell in doubtful joy
O Full of scorpions
is my mind, dear
wife…
Be innocent of the
knowledge,
dearest chuck, till
thou applaud the
deed
Gentle my Lord.
Sleek o’er your
rugged looks, be
bright and jovial
amongst they
guests tonight

Use of Metaphor

We know that metaphor is the use of an unrelated
idea to create comparison. It is very direct and
creates a strong image.

Why has Shakespeare chosen these metaphors?

“We have scorched the snake, not killed it”
“O full of scorpions is my mind…”
“Dearest Chuck”
“Light thickens”
“Make our faces vizards to our hearts..”

3.4 Banquet

Here are 3 film versions of the banquet. Which do you
find the most convincing and why?

Watch them, make notes and discuss before we share
our thoughts. What elements of the text do you notice?

Orson Welles

Working with the text

The scene uses gaps in the meter for dramatic
effect.

Look at the scene – on the next slide – and lok for
lines which are not iambic pentameter – they fall
short.

If there is no indent in the next line, we have a gap
in the meter…

What do you think these forced silences are for?

MACBETH
Here had we now our country's
honour roof'd,
Were the graced person of our
Banquo present;
Who may I rather challenge for
unkindness
Than pity for mischance!
ROSS
                                   His absence,
sir,
Lays blame upon his promise.
Please't your highness
To grace us with your royal
company.
MACBETH
The table's full.
LENNOX
                    Here is a place
reserved, sir.
MACBETH
Where?
LENNOX
Here, my good lord.
 What is't that moves your
highness?
MACBETH
Which of you have done this?
Lords
                                  What, my
good lord?
MACBETH
Thou canst not say I did it: never
shake
Thy gory locks at me.
ROSS
Gentlemen, rise: his highness is not
well.

Still relaxed
as Lennox
completes
the line

Great Chain task

How does Act 3.4 support the idea that the
breaking of the Great Chain of Being has brought
disruption to the natural world?

3 PEARL paragraphs.

THINK:
Supernatural visible in natural world, gender
reversal, hierarchies lost or shifting…
