  1. Understand Yourself-Strengths, Skills, and what kind of work you are able do Find jobs-networking, websites, Apply-create supporting documents such as resume, cover letter, references list, thank you letters Interview Accept the job! OR learn from the experience and keep searching.

  2. What do you want on your resume in 5 years? What are you doing now that you don t want to be doing in a year? What do you see yourself doing in 5 years? If you don t think about where want to be, where will you be in 5 years? More skill-more responsibility-more $. Life s not all about money, but increased $ does come with increased skill. So how can you increase your skill set? Nothing, no experience, is ever wasted mistakes included. Keep Keep LEARNing LEARNing, Keep , Keep GROWing GROWing! !

  3. Why? this is who you are on paper Employers are busy Highlights and helps you think of your key strengths Goal: Get and prepare for interview

  4. Standard to create a resume TARGETED job you are trying to find TARGETED to the Easy with electronically saved resumes to make changes and save. A Living Document. You may have several different resumes.

N Name, address, phone, email ame, address, phone, email Profile Profile-key strengths and skills Employment: going back 10- years or FUNCTIONAL skills list Job Title, Company, Dates, Duties B Bullet points describing duties Actions Education dates of degrees and diplomas; high school not needed Employment: Reverse CHRONOLOGICAL order ullet points describing duties Actions and results Education- if age is a factor, leave off the results

  6. NO OBJECTIVE why?? NO REFERENCES make and copy a separate list

  7. Theyre different! And have different purposes and goals: Resume s goal is to get you an interview. Application is a legal document for the employer.

  8. SUCCINCT & CONCISEshort phrases not long sentences Use KEY WORDS of the industry WHITE SPACE BULLETS ACTION VERBS to describe job tasks & results ACTION ----- RESULT Present Tense-current job Past Tense-former jobs PERFECT spelling, grammar, punctuation FRESH EYES-work, set aside, look again

  9. Open Word. Use sample resume in book as example. Add Name, Address, Phone, Email Add Skills, Education, Employment You ll have more time to finish when we next meet. Save to desktop or flash drive, email to self-I ll come around and help with this Print and turn in rough draft today

TO yourself (if you dont have a flash/thumb drive Save to desktop: Click File (upper left, blue) Click Save As (underneath File) File Name: Your name resume Month 2015 On left side of window, click Desktop or your flash drive, usually called Removable Disk E: or F: Click Save Document is now saved on the computer s desktop screen or to your flash drive.

Open your email account Click Compose In To box, type your email and jeanne.Schmidt@mcckc.edu peter.warner@mcckc.edu, simon.muturi@mcckc.edu In the Subject box, type Your name resume Click the paperclip Save As box will open. Click the location on left where you saved your resume. When you find the resume, click it once Click Open. The resume will attach to the email. Click Send.
