  1. ACCEPTING RESPONSIBILITY Mascot Time for 10/2/17

  2. Accepting Responsibility Topic: Accepting Responsibility Primary Objective: The students will understand what it means to take personal responsibility for their actions. Supplies needed: Paper/pencil, Pre/Post Activity, Responsibility tips Facilitate a group discussion about the following questions: Are you a responsible person? Looking back at 8thgrade or 9thgrade year, what can you do to make your next year better? How will you accept responsibilities to fulfill your duties?

  3. Instructions Have students complete the Pre/Post Activity on notebook paper. (Next Slide). Discuss (whole group) the activity questions once all students have completed it. Have students complete the Do s and Don ts of Responsibility Activity on notebook paper. (Slide 5 and 6) Have students discuss the Do s and Don ts Activity with a partner.

  4. Decide whether the following statements are TRUE or FALSE. Number on a sheet of paper and write T or F for each statement. 1. Some people are born responsible and some are not. 2. Responsibility means understanding what you need to do, and then doing it. 3. People don t have any responsibilities until they are adults. 4. I fulfill all my obligations. 5. Part of being responsible is recognizing that your actions have an impact on others. 6. I use good judgment and think through the consequences of my actions. 7. Good teammates must be responsible to each other. 8. I am accountable for my actions, I don t make excuses or blame others. 9. If you have the ability to do something good, then you have an obligation to do it. 10. Worrying about letting people down is a waste of time.

  5. The Dos and Donts of Responsibility Read to students the following: Do s 1. Have a positive attitude about your duties. 2. Make every effort to do exactly what you have been instructed to do. 3. Put your responsibilities before doing other things. 4. Do your best work regardless of who you are doing it for. 5. Take any assignment or duty your are given seriously and complete what you start. Don ts Don t approach your responsibilities with a negative attitude. Don t do your duties halfway. Don t procrastinate.

  6. Continued: The Dos and Donts of Responsibility Complete the statements on notebook paper. Five ways I will be more responsible this year.. 1. At School 2. At School 3. At Home 4. In my community 5. With my peers

  7. Closing Remarks I can take responsibility for my actions and recognize that I am accountable for my own success. (Allow students to discuss the meaning of this statement as it relates to them.) Optional Extension Activity: Students could keep a responsibility log for 1 week listing how they were responsible every day. Students could write five things they could say to themselves when they are tempted to act irresponsibly.
