  3. Two Centre Approach Two Centre Approach Outward Bound Trust Outward Bound Trust Pupils and staff will be spread across two centres in England and Wales. In practice there is no difference between both centres. We are spread across two centres only for capacity reasons. Both centres are run by Outward Bound experts in outdoor education. Pupils will be offered a similar range of activities.

  4. Location 1 Location 1 Aberdovey, North Wales Aberdovey, North Wales The largest of the two centres, Outward Bound Aberdovey is in North Wales. This centre will be host to 144 young people and 13 members of PHS staff

  5. Location 2 Location 2 Howtown, Lake District Howtown, Lake District Howtown, Lake District is a new venue. In the past we have attended Ullswater in the Lake District, Howtown is just across the water. This centre will be host 36 young people and 4 members of PHS staff

  6. Arrival at the centre Arrival at the centre Upon arrival, young people will be assigned to a group of 12. They will then meet both their assigned member of PHS staff, and their highly qualified Outward-Bound instructor. This group of 14 will work exclusively in partnership throughout the week. This allows young people to develop strong relationships with each other, as well as the adults responsible for their wellbeing and safety. Every year PHS staff are amazed by the amount that instructors know about our young people from Day 1 onwards.

  7. How are the groups made? How are the groups made? As you will be aware, all S1 pupils have been given the opportunity to select a buddy. This will make pairs who will be together for the duration of the week including bus travel, groups and rooms. We are keen to get young people outside of their comfort zone and want them to meet new people. Therefore, groups will be broad in terms of friendship groups, personalities and interests. I will take advice from SLT, Pastoral and Wider Staff to make sure the groups created are as successful as they can be to ensure everyone has a positive experience.

  8. Rooming Rooming Once assigned to their groups, the Outward-Bound team will then show young people to their rooms. These will be made largely from their groups. Most young people will be sharing a room of 6 with the other 5 members of their group. Some rooms are dorms of 4 also. This may change for some groups based on numbers, however, all young people will be in a room with someone they know and have chosen. Once in their rooms, they will be asked to make their own beds and unpack for the week!

  9. Groups and Groups and Roomings Roomings As you can imagine, for over 180 young people across two centres, the process of creating groups and rooms is incredibly complex and takes time. I will of course take on board requests from pupils, parents and carers. However, I may not be able to meet every single request. This can often be a very fluid process with changes having to be made as late as the morning of the trip departing if last year is anything to go by

  10. Activities throughout the week Activities throughout the week It s important to stress that no two groups will have the same experience throughout the week. OB instructors are skilled in creating unique activity plans that meet the needs of and challenge the group they have. While not every group will do the same activities, activities will be almost exclusively outdoors. All groups will have an expedition activity, and at least one water based activity.

  11. Possible Activities Include Possible Activities Include Camping Hiking Rock-Climbing Scrambling Canoeing Kayaking Sailing Gorge-Walking Campfires Pier Jumping

  12. Safety Safety PHS and OB staff work in partnership to ensure that the safety of your young people is the single biggest priority of the week. This begins with the medical forms that we need filled out, to ensure any medical/safety issues are identified well in advance of the course. Groups are led by highly qualified and experience outdoor instructors who are unwavering in the commitment to safety. While instructors take the lead on pupil safety, PHS staff are also on hand at all times to emphasise expectations, handling medication and providing pastoral support.

  13. Safety Safety Outward Bound prides itself on the safety of pupils and staff. All Outward-Bound staff and PHS staff members will attend a morning briefing at 8.30am every day to discuss safety. This includes discussions on potential risk factors, such as weather, water levels and hazards that may occur. Mitigation of these risks are discussed, and contingencies put in place. Safety equipment including harnesses, helmets, PPE etc is of the highest quality and standard.

  14. Safety Equipment Safety Equipment All specialist equipment is provided as part of the overall cost of the trip. Pupils do not need to bring any specialist equipment with them. Please do not buy anything. Pupils may want to bring their own walking boots, if they have them, but this is also net necessary.

  15. Supervision Supervision During the day, young people are obviously supervised by member of PHS staff and Outward-Bound instructor. In the evenings, PHS staff will register young people in their rooms and turn lights out at designated time. Outward Bound instructors leave the site, and PHS staff go to rooms on site, but in a different area of centre. During the night, Outward Bound have a dedicated night team who patrol the area around the centre and are the first port of call for any issues young people have during the night. Young people will know how to reach the night team and where to go in the event of any issues and the Lead Staff Member for that site will be contacted immediately.

  16. Behaviour and Expectations Behaviour and Expectations PHS staff will manage any behaviour that falls below the high expectations we set. Pupils will be made aware of this before and throughout the trip. In the event of any serious breaches of expectations, Mr Ryalls will be contacted, and you may be contacted by a member of staff to discuss concerns. If the Lead Staff Member or Outward Bound deem a young person to be endangering themselves or others, they will be asked to leave, and arrangements put in place for them to return home.

  17. Mobile Phones Mobile Phones Both sites will run a no phones policy. Young people are of course allowed to bring their phones; however, they will not have access to them during the day. Once pupils come down to start the day, their phones will put in a sealed bag and locked away till the end of the day's activity around 9pm. We are trying to encourage pupils to be mindful of the world around them, and don t want this to be spoiled by phone use. Many activities take place on water, in dirt, in the wild, we do not want phones to be damaged or lost. Many activities will require pupils to wear specialist clothing, which do not have anywhere for phones to be stored. Your advance support in preparing young people for this would be very much appreciated.
