  1. REPORTED SPEECH 1 Prof. ngel Araiza, May 18th 2020.

  2. Reported Speech is a method of narration that helps us say what other people say at a determined time. It is what we use to say a Gossip , the He said/ She said of communications.

  3. It is also what reporters use to Report on what people said during Interviews. That s the reason why it s called Reported Speech . It is a Social skill, and very used in conversations. If a person asks a question, we can say Person asked instead.

  4. There are 2 kinds of Reported Speech: Reporting on things that happened in the past Reporting on things that happen simultaneously.

  5. Reported Speech in the Past: It is used to indicate things that didn t happen at the same time of the reporting. Usually refers to conversations in a time in the past: Yesterday, two days ago, five days ago, etc.

  6. With the verbal times: We use the immediate past form if the sentence we want to say, and every sentence starts with a variation of He said/ She said ,

  7. Examples: Regular Speech John: I like to build airplane models. Reported Speech John said that he liked to build airplane models. Mary said that she was taking her son to buy clothes. Pete said that he had finished the test. Mary: I am taking my son to buy clothes. Pete: I have finished the test / I finished the test / I had finished the test. The Petersons: We will take vacations at the Bahamas. Jack: I m going to buy a new car. The boss: Complete the report! Mom: Are you ready? Karen: Who is the Manager? The Petersons said they would take vacations at the Bahamas. Jack said he was going to buy a new car. The Boss said to complete the report. Mom asked if I was ready. Karen asked who the manager was.
