3. What is academic advising? Really

4. University of Missouri-Columbia Academic advisers are faculty and staff assigned to help you make the most of your time at Mizzou. They will assist you in finding a degree program that matches your interests and abilities, meeting graduation requirements and finding out about extracurricular activities that will boost your skills and broaden your experiences. In other words, your academic adviser is your guide, interpreter and mentor. Ideally, the academic adviser encourages a collaborative relationship with the student based on a sharing of responsibilities. The goal of the relationship is to guide the student toward accepting responsibility for his/her own learning and academic decision-making. (https://advising.missouri.edu/about/)

Through the advising experience at UMSL, you will have the opportunity to: Examine and develop an understanding of your personal interests and skills. Make informed decisions that will lead to enrolling in courses and programs that match your interests, skills and goals. Formulate a plan for achieving identified academic goals, including a degree completion plan. Select appropriate coursework for your degree program. Seek assistance with questions and challenges while progressing through your academic program. Explore discipline-appropriate activities that build academic potential, strengthen transferable skills, increase personal communication, and develop leadership abilities. 8. University of Missouri-St. Louis (cont) When Do I Meet With My Advisor? At UMSL, all undergraduate students are required to meet with an advisor: Before you enroll in your first semester. When you complete 90 hours. Throughout your career, you should make appointments or may be required to make appointments for several reasons including: Enrollment each semester You have met certain milestones in your degree program Changing your major You have not declared a major and have earned 60 hours Your admission status requires further appointments You are on academic probation You are at risk of losing financial aid eligibility or have lost financial aid eligibility You want to withdraw from the University Anytime you have a question! 12. A Great Life A great life includes something worth living for, maybe even worth dying for. A portion of a great life would be devoted to something bigger, greater, grander than yourself. Something that inspires you, energizes you, pulls you forward. Something that responds to your unique talent or touch and, ultimately, makes a difference in the world around you. A great life would naturally bring more meaning, purpose, love, laughter, wonder, and adventure to your days. And, at the end of your journey you would look back on a life of significance, rather than regret knowing in your heart that you left the world better than you found it. Knowing that you made a difference in the lives of others. Knowing that you got something wonderful out of it, and you gave something wonderful back.
