WHY DO PEOPLE
JOIN EXTREMIST
ORGANIZATIONS?

There is no one reason that people join extremist
organizations.

People are usually trying to fill a personal need. This
could be because they feel alone, that their lives lack
meaning, or that they have no purpose in life.

People who are emotionally upset after a stressful
event may be vulnerable to recruitment.

Some people join because they disagree with
government policies.

Certain people may also feel that they are not valued
by society or think they have no opportunity to
succeed.

RECRUITMENT BY PERSONAL PROBLEMS

Extremist organizations will often
exploit someone's personal problems
to recruit them to their organization.
They make you believe that they are
going to take care of you and are
the only ones who will. They will use
negative things that have happened
to you to convince you that their way
is the only way to deal with a
situation.

RECRUITMENT: WHAT THEY WOULD SAY

“Death and destruction are the only ways to take back our nation.”

“If you die for this cause, you will be admired by your family and
rewarded in the afterlife.”

“Violence and terrorism are the best ways to change government
policy.”

“We need you to join our fight and help us build the perfect world for
our people.”

“The government is ignoring a serious threat to our cause. If you don’t
respond, no one will.”

“You are one of us. You must join our struggle.”

"Governments that hurt our people or violate our beliefs must be
destroyed.”

MAKING CONTACT

Extremist groups often make contact in online forums, chat
rooms, and internet games that promote violence.

Social media is an easy way to target people. They can
troll social networking sites to find people who are
posting about attending rallies and protests.

Apps on phones have also become a way for extremist
groups to make contact.
