UK Suicide rates
Environmental factors affecting mental
health in our region
Our area is in the top 20 most deprived regions of the UK
Common mental health problems such as depression and anxiety are
distributed according to a gradient of economic disadvantage across society.
The poorer and more disadvantaged are disproportionately affected by
common mental health problems and their adverse consequences
Most link to economic deprivation - poor housing, unemployment / low paid
work/ zero hours contacts etc. Lots of single parent families (esp among
white, British) plus combined family units etc.
Also discrimination ( different cultures etc), groups/ gang culture in some
areas, pressure of social media among young people.
Pendle health in summary
The health of people in Pendle is varied compared with the England average.
Pendle is one of the 20% most deprived districts/unitary authorities in England
and about 23% (4,300) of children live in low income
families.
Life expectancy for both men and women is lower than the England average.
Levels of GCSE attainment are worse than the England average
Priorities in Pendle include encouraging healthy lifestyles, improving mental
health and wellbeing, and improving health outcomes for children and young
people (including reducing infant deaths).
