2025 WISTCA Clinic 5-9-1 INFRACTIONS FOR ALL RACES There are several sections of the rulebook that apply to Infractions for Races Not Run in Lanes, Rule 5-9-1, 2, & 3 and Rule 5-13-1, 2, 3, & 4.
2025 WISTCA Clinic 5-9-1 defines Interference: Interference is any action by a competitor that unfairly changes the course or natural running rhythm of a competitor during a race. This may include bumping, tripping, or tunning across the competitor s path. Interference can occur without any contact.
2025 WISTCA Clinic Rule 5-13: Infractions for Races Not Run in Lanes Rule 5-13-1: Any competitor shall not deliberately run on or inside the track curb (or painted line), and thereby gain an advantage by improving position or shortening the course. PENALTY: Disqualification from the event.
2025 WISTCA Clinic Rule 5-13: Infractions for Races Not Run in Lanes Rule 5-13-2: A competitor shall not, when running around a curve, step on or over the curb, or painted curb line, for three or more consecutive steps with either or both feet. PENALTY: Disqualification from the event.

2025 WISTCA Clinic Rule 5-13: Infractions for Races Not Run in Lanes Rule 5-13-3: A competitor may leave the track to retrieve a dropped relay baton provided no interference occurs and no advantage is gained. PENALTY: Disqualification from the event.
2025 WISTCA Clinic Rule 5-13: Infractions for Races Not Run in Lanes Rule 5-13-4: In a race involving a curve where lanes are not specified, a competitor may move toward the inside or outside of the track provided the competitor is one full running stride, approximately 7 feet, in advance of the competitor whose path is crossed. It is not a foul if a competitor crosses to the inside or outside if this action does not interfere in any way with another competitor. PENALTY: Disqualification from the event.
2025 WISTCA Clinic Situation 1 In the 1600-meter run. B1 is running behind A1. In an attempt to slow B1 down, A1 repeatedly reduces speed and when B1 attempts to pass increases speed to stay directly in front of B1. You make the call.
2025 WISTCA CLINIC Situation 2 A1 comes up on the left of B1 and impedes B1 by contact, by cutting in too soon or by stepping on the curb, or inside it to gain the lead. You make the call.
2025 WISTCA CLINIC Situation 3 Coming around the final curve ot the 1600-meter run, A1 who is leading, veers away from the curb and into the path of B1. As B1 starts to pass A1 on the inside, A1 changes direction to stay in the path of B1. There is no contact. You make the call.
2025 WISTCA CLINIC Situation 4 A1 continues to veer to the right to force B1, who is attempting to pass, to run wider and wider. You make the call.
2025 WISTCA CLINIC Situation 5 A one-turn stagger is used to start the 800-meter run, A1, running in lane 2, breaks for the inside lane, two strides before reaching the break line. You make the call.
2025 WISTCA CLINIC Situation 6 During the 800-meter run, which is not run in lanes, A1 is leading the competitors as they come off the last curve. A1 is running towards the outside of lane 1. B1 attempts to pass A1 on the inside and bumps into A1 causing A1 to alter his stride. You make the call.
2025 WISTCA CLINIC Situation 7 During the 800-meter run, which is not run in lanes, A1 is leading the competitors as they come off the last curve. A1 is running towards the outside of lane 1. B1 attempts to pass A1 on the inside and steps off the track and passes A1 and then moves back unto the track. There is no contact. You make the call.
2025 WISTCA CLINIC Situation 8 During the 800-meter run, which is not run in lanes, A1 is leading the competitors as they come off the last curve. A1 swings out from the curb and continues toward the finish line in a path which is some distance from the curb. B1 starts to pass A1 on the inside and A1 cuts back inside towards the curb and there is contact. You make the call.
