COLD CHAPTER 1 Describe the coldest weather you've ever been in. Where and when were you there? What was it like? What did you do? Create a metaphor or simile like Kenny does to illustrate how cold it was for you.
SIBLINGS CHAPTER 1 Describe a time when brothers or sisters or friends picked on you like Byron and Buphead did to Kenny. Or...describe a time you were the older sibling/friend who picked on a younger kid. What happened? What feelings were running through you? Compare your situation to Kenny s in the story.
LAZY EYE CHAPTER 2 Discuss how Kenny must feel about his eye. What must it be like to have everyone looking at it? Do you think he feels like they notice him as a person? Why or why not? Out of respect, where should people look or how should they try to act around him?
SAVED CHAPTER 2 Kenny says that he learned about getting saved...how someone could come to you when you were feeling real, real bad and could take all of your problems away and make you feel better...that the person who saved you, your personal saver, was sent by God to protect you and to help you out (28). Explore your thoughts about that idea.
PB&J CHAPTER 3 Predict why Rufus and Cody might be so happy to eat half of Kenny s peanut butter sandwich. Justify your idea with evidence from the story. Provide details from the scenes they ve been in so far.
LAUGH CHAPTER 3 All Kenny did was laugh at one joke and now Rufus is treating him differently. Explain why Rufus is acting differently around Kenny now. Discuss whether or not his reaction is fair. What s the big deal about one little laugh? Then recall a time you gave one little laugh and describe that memory.
FROZEN CHAPTER 4 Consider what Kenny is thinking while Byron tells him the story about the garbage trucks and the frozen people. Describe what it is like to hear someone tell you a story like that. Are you more likely to believe or disbelieve them? Why? What do stories like that make you feel? What do they make you think about the storyteller?
SCARE CHAPTER 5 Why does Momma feel she needs to scare Byron? How is she being fair? How is she not? Argue whether or not you think it s good parenting for Momma to treat Byron this way. Use evidence from the text to justify your thoughts.
WELFARE CHAPTER 6 Why is Byron so embarrassed about the idea of welfare food? What have you heard about welfare? What are your thoughts about it? What does Byron think people think about people who get welfare food? What have you thought about people who get welfare food?
BURIAL CHAPTER 6 Explain what kind of a person Byron is. How can he seem to be so mean one moment, then the next moment turn around and give a bird a proper burial? How do these sides of Byron mix? Why does he bury the bird? Why does he do all the things he does?
CONK CHAPTER 7 Byron gets a conk hair style because he wants Mexican-style hair and wants to be cool. What do you think about this? Should people like Byron do things like this to feel cool? Justify your answer with some logical arguments.
DAD MAD CHAPTER 7 Analyze why Dad is so mad at Byron for getting the conk hair style.
TECH CHAPTER 8 Describe a time when your family got some new technology or great new thing at your house. What was it? How was it new and different for your family? How did it make your family feel? How did family members react? How is it used today?
SANDS CHAPTER 8 Analyze the different behaviors of Byron and based on what we know about Grandma Sands, predict how she will react to them all.
DETAILS CHAPTER 9 Momma is the kind of traveler who plans everything down to the last detail. What kind of travelers are your parents? How much do they plan things down to the details and the hour-by-hour schedule? What kind of planner are you when you plan activities? Why?
HILLBILLY CHAPTER 9 What might be so bad about the family picking up hillbilly habits?
STARS CHAPTER 10 Describe the most stars you ve ever seen. Where and when were you? What was it like? How was it different from where you live? Why?
GRANDMA CHAPTER 11 Pick a grandma and describe what she is like. Physically? Emotionally? Personality? Spiritually? Describe the first time you remember meeting/seeing her. Or describe what it s been like to know her your whole life. Or if you never got to know your grandmas, what has that been like for you?
OBEY CHAPTER 11 Discuss why you think Byron starts obeying Grandma Sands right from the beginning. Justify your opinions with details from the chapter.
ROBERT CHAPTER 12 Explain what you think is going on with Grandma Sands and Mr. Robert. Why is Momma acting so strange about them? Why is this a conflict in the story? How might this situation be different in 1963 compared with today?
STEPS CHAPTER 13 Kenny says that [t]here s one good thing about getting in trouble: It seems like you do it in steps. It seems like you don t just end up in trouble but that you kind of ease yourself into it. Analyze Kenny s philosophical idea. Explain the ways it s true and maybe the ways it might not completely work.
BYRON CHAPTER 13 Discuss why you think Christopher Paul Curtis had Byron save Kenny s life. What does it mean for the story? What does it mean for Byron? Justify your thoughts with examples from the text.
