Print & Digital Preservation Landscape in Ontario Universities

Exploring the current status and future prospects of print and digital preservation in Ontario universities, with a focus on collaboration, innovation, and the Scholars Portal initiative. Serving over 476,000 students across 21 university libraries, this collaborative effort aims to enhance e-resource collections, resource sharing, scholarly communications, and professional development in the digital age. The project involves the implementation of a shared library services platform, digital repository for journals, and historical materials digitization initiatives. Anticipating further growth and impact in the near future, the initiative reflects a forward-thinking approach to ensuring the longevity and accessibility of valuable academic resources.

2. Who we serve 21 university libraries in the province of Ontario 20 provincially funded; 1 federally funded Combined student FTE >476,000 From small (~1,500 FTE) to very large (>83,000 FTE) and in between 2 bilingual universities (Ottawa, Laurentian) and 1 with a French-language campus (York)

Collaborative Futures Next generation, shared library services platform Shared cataloguing system Discovery layer Electronic resource management Print management and preservation 13 of 21 member libraries participating initially Represents a different way to work together Encourages a shared approach to our work We don t have to do the same thing 13+ times Frees time for local needs and specializations

6. Timing is everything In discussion since 2014 Procurement process in 2017 Anticipating signed agreement in near future Implementation to be scheduled but likely in 2019- 2020 Additional 4 libraries may join after initial implementation

7. Digital preservation Scholars Portal Journals trusted digital repository for OCUL (and perhaps nationally?) Scholars Portal Books a TDR in progress Research data Historical topographic maps digitization project

8. Print management & preservation Back burner (we can t do everything!) There s interest but need? So far, not as pressing for OCUL Keep@Downsview Tri Universities Group (aka TUG: Guelph, Waterloo, Wilfrid Laurier) Likely to change as libraries have more space demands Collaborative Futures may put this on the front burner

9. A Way Forward: Revisiting Thunder Bay Thunder Bay Agreement (2008-2009) Agreed upon at Lakehead University, Thunder Bay, Ontario Low-use and last copy print materials Initial focus: Coordinated print journal retention & collaborative storage Distributed model desirable Challenges Costs No shared system Not all holdings in OCLC

11. Whats happened since @Risk North CRKN: National TDR, merger with Canadiana.org HathiTrust Canadian Members University of Alberta opened a new facility Discussions among U5 LAC-CARL Working Group on Canadian Collective Print Strategy (a direct result of the @Risk North meeting)

12. New directions Two main directions we would like to take: Link activities in Canada with CRL, EAST, and other shared print initiatives Commit to connecting print & digital preservation
