Post pandemic policy: Context, challenges, opportunities
Context A massively increased role of the state in the economy and Government debt close to 100% of GDP GDP declined by 9.8% in 2020, the steepest drop since consistent records began in 1948 Acceleration of existing trends in remote work and automation, increased unemployment Debt and housing issues; 564,000 people in rent arrears, 190,000 owner-occupied homes in financial difficulty, 4.3 million people are behind on household bills. In first quarter of 2021, there were 632 mortgage repossessions and rental evictions. Covid exposure of inequalities
Context Restrictive regulations replaced with guidance (July 19th) Remaining support measures being withdrawn Furlough to wind down in September 20 UC uplift to be withdrawn in October Eviction protections have already been lifted (May 31st) commercial evictions ban will lift next March (2022) FCA debt and mortgage payment holiday support ending July 31st (deadline for applying was March 31st) Policy agendas focussed on building back better and levelling up
